How To Check Your Guitar Intonation Setup

Sometimes when you've tuned your guitar, you may find that somehow it still sounds off-tone. The most likely reason for this is that the intonation is out. To solve the problem, you will have to correct the guitar intonation setup.

With correct intonation, your guitar should play in tune in every fret on the neck. If it is out, the instrument is usually in tune in the first few frets. However, as you play down along the neck towards the body of the instrument, it starts losing pitch.

You can solve the problem by moving the bridge saddles. The bridge saddles are located on the body of the guitar. You fix the strings onto the guitar at the bridge saddles. Moving the bridge saddles will basically change string length to improve tonality.

Before you can do this, however, you should replace the old strings with new ones and tune your instrument. When you tune the strings, use the tuning that you normally use. In other words, if you don't normally play in standard tuning but with for example a drop D tuning instead, use that instead of standard tuning. Instead of trying to tune by ear, you should use an electronic tuner if you can, because the reading will be more accurate.

Once you've tuned the strings, you can start checking them for intonation. There are different ways of doing this, but using the harmonic will give you the best results. The harmonic is the almost tinkling sound you get when you don't press the string down but only lightly touch and release it. If you don't get this sound on the first try, touch the string in a slightly different position.

When you've got the hang of playing harmonics, do this at the twelfth fret. Then play the twelfth-fret note in the regular way. The twelfth fret is the point where there should be a one-octave difference between the note as played in the regular way and its harmonic.

Using your tuner and proceeding one string at a time, compare the reading you get when you play the note in the twelfth fret and the reading you get when you play its harmonic here too. A flat note will have a lower pitch than the corresponding harmonic. To fix this, you need to move the bridge saddle forward, in other words, in the direction of the head. A sharp note will sound higher than its corresponding harmonic and you need to move the bridge saddle backward. Every time you adjust the position of the bridge saddle, check the reading of the twelfth-fret note and its harmonic again until the harmonic is exactly an octave higher than the note.

On an electric guitar, there are separate bridge saddles for each string. You can adjust each one individually. On an acoustic guitar, however, you can't move the bridge and you will need a luthier to help you with your guitar intonation setup. Once it's done, you may find that you can't stop playing.

Some Information On America's Own Chincoteague Ponies

There are several theories as to how they first came to be there. Some believe Spanish galleons were ship-wrecked offshore and their horses made their way to the islands. However the animals first arrived, they ended up having to adapt to salt water and very little food in order to survive.

Those on Virginian soil belong to the Volunteer Fire Company of Chincoteague. Up to 150 ponies are maintained by the company. Twice a year they are are swum to the neighboring island of Chincoteague where they are examined by veterinarians, given routine vaccinations and treated for any conditions they may have.

One of these trips takes place on the last Wednesday of July when the majority of the horses are swum to Chincoteague. After being rested for a while, the ponies are driven through the streets to the carnival grounds. The foals from the previous year are auctioned off. This keeps the island population to manageable numbers. Those not sold are then returned to Assateague Island.

There are some private breeders on the mainland. The Annual Pony Swim and Penning brings much-needed funds to the Fire Company and prevents degradation of the fragile environment of the islands. Thousands watch the Pony Swim and auction. The first foal to reach the shore is named Queen or King Neptune and is raffled off on the day.

The first recorded penning was in 1835. In 1925, the ponies swam the channel for the first time. The owners would gather together and this gradually developed into a carnival which is run at the same time raising funds for the Chincoteague firemen. The tradition now draws crowds of people to watch the swimming, and to join in the carnival.

Selling off some of the animals prevents excessive damage to the fragile island environment. Inbreeding over a number of years had resulted in some having conformational defects and inherited conditions. The quality of the horses has been improved by the introduction of other breeds. Some mares are darted with a contraceptive to prevent them being bred every year. Chincoteague ponies have a characteristic bloated appearance from drinking salt water.

The animals now range between 13 and 15 hands high (a hand is four inches) and are tough and hardy. They have kind temperaments as a rule and are ideal for a number of equestrian disciplines. Solid colors are found but many are broken-colored. These pintos or paints are prized by breeders. They are generally easy to train and economical to keep. Their conformation varies somewhat but most have good, dense bone with straight legs and sound hooves. The mane and tail are thick and dense, providing good protection during cold weather. Because they are better fed, domesticated Chincoteague ponies tend to grow taller than their wild counterparts.

As I was looking over my photography one day, I noticed how alike they seemed to be, without inspiration and rather dull. But, as I focused on the poor elements of lighting, exposure, and composition in every photo, I gathered my gear together for the travels that day. Then, no matter were I went or how I tried to adjust my settings, these poor effects seemed to follow me around! I couldn't get over all of the negative effects which seemed to creep into my photography, making my morning quite unproductive.

Something had to change. As long as I kept focusing on the poor elements, they were sure to show up in my photos. The only chance for improving my photography was to focus on the strong elements. So, I decided that I first needed a break. After relaxing and reflecting on the good elements, I was finally able to identify at least one strong element in each of the photos. As I did so, even nature itself seemed to bloom with the beauty and goodness that surrounded me, but which I had neglected to pay any attention to.

As I concentrated on the beauty, more beauty seemed to present itself in fuller detail. From this one situation, I learned at least two important lessons. First, you will see whatever it is you focus on. As a photographer, it is crucial that we focus on beauty and strong elements. Second, taking a break to look at a situation with fresh eyes can be extremely valuable.
