In part one of my article about drumheads, I shared details about the number of plies in drumheads and how they affect their durability and sound. This week, I'll cover 3 additional elements of drumheads: muffling, coatings, and bottom heads.

Pre-Muffled or Wide-Open Drumheads

Heads now exist with built-in muffling to eliminate unwanted overtones, which is achieved is by applying a ring of material like Mylar to the drumhead's top or underside. Evans, a leading supplier of drumheads, offers a model with tiny-sized holes or vents along the perimeter that get rid of overtones by moving air through the membrane. Evans also offers a unique drumhead that utilizes a thin layer of oil between the two plies of their Hydraulic series to achieve a muffled tone.

Band Interview: Gringo Soul

Gringo Soul - better known as Brandon Giannasi of Dallas, TX - is funky, soulful singer-songwriter. I recently sat down for a phone interview with Brandon to get a better sense of who he is, both as a person and as an artist. First and foremost, I inquired to Brandon how he came up with his performing name. "I was working with a group of Hispanic people, and they referred to white people as 'gringos,' he said. "The word 'gringo' just rang with me, so I just decided to roll with it." Next, I asked Brandon where he finds his musical inspiration. "I get most of my inspiration from the late and great Elvis, as well as Nirvana, Sublime, Creedence Clearwater Revival, and even from artists like Vincent Van Gogh.

Giannasi writes his songs about celebrations, hardships, life lessons, and growth as a musician and as "an average gringo." Most of the creative thinking and lyric writing occurs while Brandon is driving. He says there is just something about driving that just gets him thinking and really gets his creative juices flowing. All Brandon needs while he is on stage is his Korg Keyboard, K oscillator, octopad, guitar and loop pedal and he is set to perform a great set. The crowd gets to see Brandon setting up the song and get to see all the components that go into a Gringo Soul song. He says that it takes one minute to get his back beat set up and he is good to go. Brandon has put out 4 albums as Gringo Soul, totaling in 34 songs.

Brandon is hosting an event called The Trash Bash Music Stash on June 28th. It's an event that you volunteer and you pick up trash on three streets in Dallas TX. After the trash pickup is over, there will be free food, free beer and other drinks and a free concert. And if you don't fee like picking up trash, you can pay $15 and still have some food, drink and enjoy a great show!

Aside from this event, Brandon has played many shows in Dallas and the surrounding area. "I'd have to say that one of my favorite shows I've played so far was in Forth Worth at The Woodshed. I ended up performing for about five hundred people who all seemed to respond well both to me and to my music." Brandon also tells me that if he could open for any one band, it would be Stone Temple Pilots. "I have a lot of respect for their music, and that would really be an honor if I ever get to play s show with them."

As a final thought, I asked Brandon what advice he might have for his fellow independent musicians. "If you're in a band and struggling to find an audience, or if you're interested in starting a band - if or when you get denied to play a venue or bar, you just need to stay strong. Get back up, and get on with your day."

It's All in Your Head, Part 1: A Guide to Choosing Drumheads That Are Right for You

In this 2-part article, I'm going to offer some general guidelines to help you select the right drumheads that will match your particular needs.

Drumheads are one of the most key elements of your drum. The type of drumhead that you select will determine the overall sound that your drum will produce. By installing a new drumhead, you can bring a drum "back to life" by adding tone and projection that were lost by using a worn, old head. You can also energize the sound of a less expensive drum by replacing its stock head with a new, professional-quality one.

Prior to the mid 1950s, drumheads were made of animal hides, like calfskin. This completely changed when the DuPont Company created a polyester film they called Mylar. By employing this plastic film instead of an animal skin, drumhead manufacturers such as Remo and Evans made superb sonic options possible for drummers while adding consistency in quality and tone that wasn't previously attainable. With calfskin heads, drummers had to deal with the frequent need to re-tune their drums due to weather and temperature fluctuations. Plastic drumheads virtually eliminated this hassle.

Today, plastic drumheads are utilized not just on drum sets but also on timpani, marching drums, and timbales, as well as hand drums like congas, bongos, djembes, darbukas, frame drums, surdos, pandeiros, doumbeks, tambourines, and caixas.

Number of Plies

The first thing to think about when selecting drumheads for your drum set is head weight. Single-ply heads offer a bright sound with longer resonance and sustain, while two-ply drumheads yield a darker, thicker sound with better durability. The dot can give you the durability of a two-ply head, but with a sound more like that of a single-ply head because only one layer of plastic sits on the drum's bearing edge. Drumhead manufacturers like Remo, Evans, Aquarian, Ludwig, and Attack all produce their own versions of a head with a reinforcement dot.

Three-ply - Aquarian recently introduced a three-ply head for players who require the ultimate in durability. Obviously, this head produces an extremely dark and lower fundamental pitch.

Drumsticks are one of a drummer's most important tools. They're our direct connection to our drum set. Without the proper drumstick, many drummers can't play comfortably or to the best of their abilities.

Over the years, I've spoken with drummers - from beginners to pros - who've had problems with their drumsticks. Either they were experiencing cramps in their hands or their drumsticks were literally flying out of their hands because they were unable to hold onto them while drumming. Interestingly, many of these drummers only experienced these issues during live shows. And in almost every situation, it turned out that each drummer was simply using the wrong size drumstick. Once they selected the right size stick, all of their problems were resolved.

A lot of drummers select drumsticks based on how fast they can play with them. Many of us want to blaze around the kit displaying dazzling single stroke rolls. So it would seem logical to get the lightest drumstick with the least amount of size/weight in order to play with maximum speed and agility, right?

Not necessarily.

The #1 reason why you may experience hand cramps is because you're using a drumstick that's too thin and lightweight for your playing style. The harder you hit, the looser your grip should naturally become. This will prevent injuries and allow the drumstick to absorb more of the impact. However, if you play hard with a thin and light drumstick and attempt to relax your grip, one of two things usually occurs: either you develop a cramp or you lose the ability to hold onto your stick.

You can't grasp a thin stick in a loose and comfortable manner and play hard: it's physically not possible, and the result will be drumsticks that will fly out of your hands. Conversely, if you attempt to hang on tightly to a light and thin stick while you hit hard, you'll soon develop cramps.

The best solution is to select a heavier and larger stick: you won't have to grip it as tightly and it won't go airborne on you. You'll also be pleasantly surprised that you won't lose speed/power/accuracy despite the increase in mass and weight.

In terms of why drummers have certain problems that only happen in a live scenario, it's because many drummers unknowingly morph their playing approach. Their adrenaline surges, their blood pumps, and they reflect the crowd's energy by hitting harder than they normally do during rehearsals and practice sessions.

That's when the problems kick in, and as you can imagine, playing live is the worst time for things to go wrong with your performance. Heavier sticks offer a solution to these common challenges.

To see if heavier sticks are ok for you, try this experiment: when you're trying out new drumsticks on a practice pad, try a model that's a little heftier than you think you need. You'll be surprised to find out that you'll be able to play with confidence, ease, and plenty of speed/power. Your drumsticks will also probably even last a bit longer (saving some green is just an added perk of using the right drumsticks).

(BTW, Dave Grohl drums hard, plays with speed, and almost never seems to miss where he's hitting. While in Nirvana, he used Aquarian Power-Sleeve 2Bs, a durable, heavy stick. Today, he still uses a large drumstick, his Zildjian Dave Grohl Artist Series model, which is well-suited for his aggressive style.)

Interview With Brandon Giannasi Of Gringo Soul

Brandon Giannasi, better known as Gringo Soul, is a solo artist out of Dallas, Texas. I asked Brandon where he got the name of his band, and he said it he was working with a bunch of Hispanic people and they all referred to white people as "Gringos." The word "Gringo" just rang with him so he "rolled with it," and he is now known as Gringo Soul. He gets most of his inspiration from the late and great Elvis, Nirvana, Sublime, Creedence Clearwater Revival and even from artists such as Vincent Van Gogh. All of those artists fuel to inspire him to write his funky and soulful songs.

In keeping with his performing name, Brandon tells me that he writes his songs about "being an average gringo" - the celebrations, the life lessons, hardships, and his growth as a musician. "Most of my creative thinking and lyrics writing come while I'm driving," says Brandon. "There's just something about it that gets me thinking and really gets my creative juices flowing." At 4 independent album releases and 34 songs to his credit, Brandon must do his fair share of driving. "On stage, I use my guitar, Korg Keyboard, loop pedal, K oscillator, and octopad. The crowd watching me perform get to see me set up each song using these components, and then I go into the song itself."

This year, Gringo Soul is hosting an event on June 28th called "The Trash Bash Music Stash." The event is a concert held after a volunteer trash pickup along three streets in Dallas, and includes free food and drinks for all of those participating. For the less socially motivated concert-goer, tickets are also available for the concert alone for only $15.

I then asked Brandon if he could open for any band or artist, past or present, who would he want to play with. "Stone Temple Pilots," he says, "I have so much respect for the music they make. It would an honor for me to be able to play a show with them." Since Brandon has not had such an opportunity as of yet, he tells me that his favorite show he's played so far was at The Woodshed in nearby Fort Worth, TX. He tells me that at this show, he performed in front of around 500 attendees, all of whom seemed to respond well to and enjoy his music.

To finish up this interview, Gringo Soul had a little advice for people that want to start bands and bands struggling with finding an audience: "When you get denied to play a bar or a venue, you need to stay strong and get back up and get on with your day" said Brandon.
