I can tell you, in all those photographs there were many thousands of images that might have been great stock images with real sales potential, if the photographer had only done their job right. The frustrating part is, in all those cases, the damage was done by one or two reasonably straightforward mistakes that could have been easily evaded.

Now I'll freely admit that I'm no master cameraman ... In fact I have barely touched my camera since we started building OzImages back in 1998 ... But I do know what separates an OK photo from a stock image with real sales potential. So in this two-part article I am going to look at 3 main differences I see between the part-timers and the pros.

Lighting

If I could only make one recommendation, this would be it. Most amateurs only think about lighting after the sun has gone down. An even then, all they usually do is pop up the flash. Some 'outdoor ' photographers might time their work for early morning or late afternoon light, but even then they generally tend to look at lighting as a separate part of from the image.

The pros on the other hand, consider the lighting of their subject, and they do it with each single shot.

Their focus is not just on the light, but how the light affects their subject and whether that can work for the message they're trying to capture. The pros will consider extra lighting, or shading, on every single shot. It is as much part of their routine as removing the lens cap.

For all the ease of automatic-everything cameras, I often wish they were somehow available only after the photographers had passed a manual photography course. Unfortunately, it's so easy and so handy, that most photographers who start out on automatic never go back and learn the way to control those settings themselves.

And that means there are a large number of photographers out there capturing photos that are nearly great ... But because they have absolutely no theory and only very basic technical skills, they will never know what's holding them back and more significantly, how easy it could be to correct the issues and make great images.

I see this every week with the membership applications. Shots that would have been perfect if the photographer had only turned off the center weighted auto-focus and paid more attention to their point of interest. Shots that would have been perfect if they'd turned off the preset exposure mode, and thought about their depth-of-field. Shots that might have been perfect if they would only thought about the effect of shutter speed ...

The other disappointment is those photographers who do not even make the effort to read the manual that came with their camera so they'd take full advantage of the features available to them. Here are just a few problems .. And the photographer's reasoning ... That I've seen just lately ...

1. Great submission of photographs, but they all had a serious colour cast that even I (seriously color-blind) could spot.

The last one might sound totally ludicrous but is a familiar story around here ... The photographer had a $2000 camera and was shooting tons of excellent images each week with real stock potential, if he'd only splurged another $50 on two additional memory devices. (The average point-and- shoot nowadays captures a better quality file than the one this bloke was saving!)

So my last recommendation here is, if your entire photographic experience is digital-auto, each chance you can, switch off the auto-everything and learn to do it yourself.

Even better, call into the local 2nd hand shop and pick up an old manual film camera ... They're giving them away nowadays ... And put a few rolls of film through it. You will learn more from those 100 shots than a year with your digital auto-everything!
