Find Out How To Write Quality Fiction

By Patty Goff

Most writers have a good imagination but consistently producing work of high quality requires more than just imagination. Discipline, perseverance and courage are just some of the qualities needed. Writing is both an art and a craft and it takes time and patience to learn a craft. Self-doubt is one of the biggest hindrances many authors face. It takes determination to keep writing despite any self-doubts and to keep persisting in your pursuit of learning how to write quality fiction.

Reading books written by good authors is one of the ways to improve. Compare plots, characters and styles. You will get a better idea of what works and can use your observations to improve your own writing. Reading your novel aloud can also be a great help. Do your sentences have a rhythm? Are they too long and convoluted?

The life of a writer requires a certain amount of being solitary. You need to address unnecessary issues that eat away at your time and intrude upon your space. Planning, writing a draft and rewriting are virtually impossible under certain circumstances.

Many people have an idea for a novel but it requires dedication to actually produce one. Good fiction does not just happen. There are many stages to creating one, from its design with settings, plot and characters to actually writing it and then rewriting too. Even the most experienced writers often have a strict schedule when it comes to their writing and are often only satisfied after a few rewrites.

It is often difficult for writers to expose their work to others and open up to criticism. They have bled their hearts out onto the pages and feel very vulnerable. However, positive criticism from others can do a great deal to help you improve your work. You may also be greatly encouraged when others say how much they love your writing. Attending writing groups or workshops can give you this opportunity.

Observation is a skill possessed by most good writers. Jotting down observations and thoughts in a notebook is helpful. Carry one around with you at all times as these impressions and thoughts may be fleeting and need to be captured before they disappear. Most authors will tell you that you need to show rather than tell when writing a good novel and these observations can help you do this.

No matter how successful writers become, they often still have to face self-doubt at times. When starting out as a writer, you may have to face rejection many times. Courage is needed to face this and to move on. Take heart that many famous authors faced rejection and went on to be very successful.

Dedication, long hours, commitment and infinite patience are all necessary when it comes to perfecting the art of writing. Just about every person has an idea for a book but not many have what it takes to actually produce one. To improve your writing is most certainly possible but like anything else of value, it requires some sacrifice to succeed.
