Tips For Choosing Cremation Urns

By Tanisha Berg

Cremation urn plays a major role in the cremation process especially that of human beings because the cremains need to be stored afterwards. The cremains need to be carried in a vessel to the final resting or disposal place. The carrying and storage are done in cremation urns which are made specifically for that purpose. With many companies venturing into this business, one needs to have some information before setting out to make a purchase.

Picking an urn is not a walk in the park, it is an activity affected by many factors. These factors include size, color, material, design, seller, customizations, resting place, and cost. Cremains vary in size hence the choice of size should be done wisely. Smaller animals generate less ash when cremated compared to large ones.

Standard urns have a size of 170 to 350 cubic inches while the large ones have a volume of 400 to 500 inches cubed. Small urns can hold as little as one teaspoonful of ash only while big models can accommodate the cremains of two adults. The best way of choosing the size is adding one cubic inch for every pound of flesh to be cremated.

Urns are made in a wide variety of colors. This allows buyers a wide variety of colors to choose from. One can even choose the color depending on the favorite color of the deceased. This is a good way of showing respect to the departed soul. If the item is meant to be placed in the house, the choice of color can be made depending on the interior theme in the home.

Material of construction matter a lot. One should choose the material before they go out for shopping. The two broad classes of materials are non-biodegradable and biodegradable. Bronze, plastic, marble, ceramic, cloth, glass, wood, and cardboard are the most commonly used materials. The environmentally friendly materials are normally the choice of most environmental activists. Interior decor can be matched by choosing appropriate colors that do not cause much contrast. Some materials allowing information such as name, hobbies, marital status, and age to be engraved into them.

Another choice one is required to make is the design. This choice is relatively difficult to make because the market is filled with hundreds of designs yet others continue being introduced daily. Shape and all artistic works on the item are covered under the design. The vessels come in different shapes sometimes resembling items like balls, devices, or fruits. This allows the buyer to pick the shape that was favorite to the deceased. Photos and other personal stuff are placed near the vessel.

The resting place is the final place where the vessel will be placed to stay forever after the funeral and memorial services. The location can be indoor or outdoor. It now becomes obvious that materials used to build urns for indoor purposes cannot be similar to those for outdoor. Some people decide to bury them underground while other bury them in water.

Some of the factors mentioned above play a key role in influencing the cost. Some of the factors are material, size, and design. The price may also depend on the manufacturer because some companies price their products higher than others.
