The Compelling Appeal Of Crime Fiction Books

By Deanne Shepard

Revenge, cowardice, greed and lust are just some emotions humans deal with in the real world. Crime fiction books explore these emotions and perhaps this is one reason why they are so popular. We can live through the experiences vicariously and explore these emotions with all the fear and tension happening to someone else. However, it is hard to pin down exactly why we enjoy these novels so much and everyone asked will probably offer a different answer.

The elements of suspense and mystery have definite appeal. Other novels without this element seem to pale in comparison. The reader experiences the adrenalin rush of being right in the middle of pulse-racing events drawing to a climactic conclusion. The fact that such novels are often referred to as page turners bears this out with the reader feeling compelled to find out what happens next.

As readers, we are often privy to how the mind of the killer works from an early stage. This is often the hook of a psychological thriller. We are drawn into their world and begin to understand their motives and what drives them, however twisted this might be.

The person who is going after the killer, is often well portrayed by the author. A depth of character is revealed, flaws and all and we can relate as the individual doggedly goes about finding the perpetrator despite his or her own personal problems. We experience the process of discovery as the protagonist experiences it and sometimes even try to jump ahead and reach a conclusion first.

These novels are set in a wide variety of places all over the globe. Novels from places like the Scandinavian countries have been translated and can now be enjoyed by English speakers. They are also set in varying times, from medieval mysteries to those set in modern times and even some set in the future.

The themes covered are those which have fascinated humans for years. Life and death, evil and good are just some of the high stakes issues involved. The emotions of greed, courage, cowardice, revenge and lust are all exposed. Reassuringly, evil is exposed and perpetrators must face the consequences.

These types of novels vary greatly from really gruesome thrillers to those more suited to the armchair detective who enjoys sleuthing. Some people prefer psychological thrillers or those where the forensic details are covered extensively. From the classic whodunit to those with more gore and action, there are those to suit every taste.

These type of novels cover many facets of human nature and themes that have always held fascination. In them justice is usually served and the mystery is unraveled. The popularity of these novels means that they are widely available and now they can even be bought from internet stores. Readers now have so many options available to them that it can help to read book reviews written by other customers before deciding what to purchase.
