Some Handy Tips On How To Get On A Reality TV Show

By Alyssa McCall

Many television programmes over the last decade or so, in countries across the world, have been what is often termed 'reality television.' Despite its name, this usually involves placing people in a group in a highly contrived situation, and then filming and broadcasting what unfolds. It has proved to be a route into often brief celebrity for many people, so it might be worth you knowing how to get on a reality TV show.

As a way into a media career, going on this type of show can provide a useful first step into television, though it is a highly competitive. You need to consider a number of issues before you take any steps towards becoming involved in the process though. There are many negatives which can result from just becoming involved in the process at an early stage.

Anyone who wants to get themselves on television in this way must be aware that their whole life, and that of their friends and family, will be considered fair game for tabloid journalists and others. Your life, your past and everything in it is liable for exposure, and subject to judgement from the general public. People will be talking about you, and it will not necessarily be very pleasant.

The whole of your past life is set for a great deal of scrutiny if you end up in this sort of situation, and all of the people in it. Your family, even estranged members of it who are no longer in contact with you, might well be subject to a much media intrusion, or provide the press with embarrassing stories about you. You must ask yourself whether you, and those others who are closest to you, can really put up with this kind of intrusion into their lives.

The next thing to consider before you take the plunge into the weird and occasionally wonderful world of reality television is whether you are prepared to make yourself look foolish. You are likely to be set a series of tasks to complete in many shows, many of which are likely to be humiliating in some way. Some of these activities will also be disgusting or revolting, so you must ready for it.

You must also be ready to go through an ordeal when it comes to how other people on the programme might react to you. In a competitive environment like this, egos run rampant, and alliances can be forged and broken with remarkable rapidity. You may well be excluded from the group at some stage, and you should have a robust enough personality to be able to deal with this when it happens.

If you are satisfied that you can handle all of the likely negative consequences which might result from your attempt to become something of a celebrity, then you can think about the actual process of becoming part of a programme. The most straightforward way of doing this is to look out for casting calls from your favourite programmes. Many programmes invite hopefuls along to specific locations for auditions when they are planning a new season.

So if you are wondering about how to get on a reality TV show, then the first thing to do is think seriously about whether you really want to do it. If you are still sure, then start selling yourself to producers. If you are not, then it is probably wise to give up.
