How To Become A Calligraphy Artist

By Elnora McCullough

In history, calligraphy has been known to be one of the most respected art forms in the entire world as only the scholars and royalty were allowed to learn in. In Europe, China, India, Korea, Japan, and other many countries really patronized people who knew how to do this. Until today, being a calligraphy artist is something that many people admire.

The most important step in becoming a master of this ancient form of writing is to gather all the materials. The main tool of any calligrapher is of course his handy brush. Now this tool is nothing like a normal paint brush because it is much thicker and its bristles are a little bit more edgy than that of a paint brush. With a proper brush, a calligrapher can make a lot of beautiful writings.

The next thing to think about would be the type of ink that is used in this ancient art form. Now the ink used here is not like any normal pen ink that will stay on the paper. Instead, this ink is a special one that looks a little glossy and will unfortunately not stay on the paper if it is exposed to water until it is very dry already.

When the necessary tools and materials are already set, the first thing that a novice calligrapher must do is learn the proper way of holding the brush. Now in calligraphy, there is a certain way of gripping the brush so that each letter or character will come out smoothly without any rough edges in the side. Remember that the wrist will not be making any movement but the whole arm will.

When one starts out writing for the first time, he should first write the letters or characters down in a piece of paper first and start tracing these letters. This will help him get a better feel of how it is to be able to write with a brush. Only when he already has perfected how to make the strokes, then he can take away this guide.

The push technique is one of the most important and basic techniques in this entire art. It is also one of the first techniques that will be taught to beginning calligraphers. In order to do this, one must just push the brush in the direction where the stroke goes to.

The pulling stroke is obviously the opposite of the push stroke as it pulls the brush back in order to make a circular shape that has a thicker consistency of ink. In order to do this, one must pull back the brush slowly and push it downward on to the paper. Doing this will actually require a strong wrist because it can hurt the hand if not done properly.

So as one can see, learning to be a calligraphy artist is not that easy because there are so many techniques to learn. The masters of this art have spent many years learning to do this and many more years to actually perfect it. It is from there that they have produced eternal art pieces.
