How To Add A Personal Touch To A Classic Family Portrait

By Cindy Raj

It's that time of the year once more when you find yourself considering ideas for your yearly family portrait session. For the past few years, you have stuck to the traditional formal setup, which, although beautiful, appeared to embody the exact same thing year after year. For a change, you need to come up with something your family will not forget too quickly.

And then you start asking yourself what themes you should adopt. To help you decide better, keep the following tips in mind.

What is your family's personality, or perhaps the activities you all love doing together? Do you all love music? Do you love to travel? Are you especially partial to the colour yellow? Do you have a preferred film or TV show, whose characters have their respective counterparts in your family? Do you have any preference for super heroes?

Let this act as your inspiration for your family portrait's theme. Putting in props would also make the scene appear more vibrant and real, such as bringing maps, souvenirs, and luggage if you are a family of travellers. Meanwhile, musical instruments would add a nice authentic touch to a portrait of a family of musically-inclined, something photographers will surely have fun capturing.

When it comes to photographers for family portraits, you have to remember to choose the best fit for your own needs. Photographers produce varied qualities of work; similarly, what is lovely for one may not strike as good enough for everybody else. That is why you should always look at a photographer's sample family portraits before signing up for a session. By considering these samples, you can gauge which photographer could give you the results you want.

Feel free to solicit suggestions for other ideas from your photographer. Likewise, you can request tips on how to enhance your own concept and make it more camera-friendly. The more the creative contribution that goes into the family portrait, the better it would turn out.
