How to Choose Your Stormtrooper Costume

By Amanda Black

If you enjoy the Star Wars movies and stories, you probably want to dress up like one of the characters from the franchise and the Stormtrooper is always a fun choice. While stormtroopers are hardly the most beloved characters in Star Wars, they are dramatic and frightening bad guys with impressive costumes and weapons. This can make them fun character costume choices and in this article we will help you find some ideas for tracking down the best Stormtrooper costumes and accessories.

When planning any kind of costume, the more details you include, the more realistic it will look. With the Stormtrooper costume, the boots are one feature that you shouldn't overlook. Remember, these are the soldiers for the Empire--they are loyal, tireless, march over dozens of different types of terrain--it's important that their footwear be good. When you buy the costume it probably comes with boots but if you make a costume of your own, you will find a good pair of boots to go with it. The best boots are going to be tall and white and match the armor that covers the rest of the Stormtrooper's body. You don't have to spend lots of money on your boots but they should match the rest of your costume too.

These aren't for the casual party goers who only want to dress up for one night; they are for hardcore Star Wars fans who want and enjoy collecting this kind of memorabilia. It doesn't matter if you are already a collector or just starting out, it is important to do your research and find out what the actual authentic value of these real items is.

If you have the resources and time you can create your own Stormtrooper costume from scratch. Find inspiration by watching scenes from the movie or looking at stills to see how they look and then build your costume using things that are easy to buy or that you already have at home. You could, for example, make the armor out of cardboard that's been painted white. The helmet is also important but you can use a motorcycle, bicycle or sports helmet that you either paint white or cover in white material. You can complete your costume with a white pair of boots. A blaster may be a little more complicated to make, but it can be done -or you could find an inexpensive blaster type toy gun that can be used for this purpose.

It's good to at last think about renting instead of buying your Stormtrooper costume. Costume rentals is a big industry because people prefer to rent costumes for the times they only need to wear the costume once--it saves them from having to store it the rest of the year.

Ever since the first Star Wars movie hit the screens more than thirty years ago, thousands--if not millions--of people have put on costumes that have been inspired by this series. The Stormtrooper costume has become one that plenty of people enjoy wearing, most likely because so much thought was put into it by the costume designers on the films.
