The Link Between Singing And Breathing

By Eunice Pugh

Discovering how to inhale and exhale properly plays an important role in a person's ability to sing professionally. Singing and breathing are activities that are intertwined. For this reason, if one uses poor techniques when practicing, pitch problems will result and it will be more difficult to reach power notes. It is possible, however, for one to learn how to breathe properly through the use of specific techniques.

Proper use of the diaphragm is an essential part of professional vocal training. One should use his or her stomach to inhale and exhale, as this is a great way to train the diaphragm. One must first lie down and inhale as fully as possible. After this, the singer should exhale in a slow, controlled manner. For best results, the exhalation should take longer than the inhalation.

It is also essential to avoid exhaling or inhaling through one's nose when singing. While inexperienced singers are frequently tempted to inhale or exhale through their nose, this will not result in a good sound when they are performing. Mouth breathing, however, ensures that the tongue assumes a low position, which assists the singer to achieve the sound he or she desires.

Keeping the soft palate high and taut when performing a song is vitally important as well, as this will ensure a good sound. It can be challenging to control the soft palate unless one breathes through his or her mouth. Although it may be possible to control the soft palate when practicing nose breathing, it is very difficult and therefore should be avoided.

A singer's practice itinerary should also include relaxation techniques. Stomach strengthening exercises are the best choice, as they help one to achieve diaphragm control. Some examples of these include situps and stomach crunches.

singing and breathing are simultaneous activities. Therefore, it is wise for those who wish to become professional singers to implement the exercises listed above into their training. When a suitable amount of time and effort is devoted to the task, anyone can learn the aforementioned techniques and breathe properly when singing.
