Lots of popular movies now days use visual effects during the production process. Sometimes they are computer generated and other times they are live action shots that have been added into a specific scene or shot. Occasionally the two forms will be added in together in a special hybrid sequence. Many computer visualizations are added in also with live action scenes.

Many times studios will use it when they are needing a realistic scene that would be impossible or too dangerous if a normal actor portrayed it. Also many times stunt doubles as well as specially trained people will play out a scene where the actors are uncomfortable or there is a sense of danger. Imagery that is computer generated is probably the most common form that is used in Hollywood today.

There has been lots of advancements in hardware and software programs that now allow studios to add in scenes to movies. Lots of big budget movies will add in several shots to add in suspense or drama. Science fiction, action, and fantasy movies usually use the technique the most. Special shots can either be drawn or animated in.

The timing of the various shots and scenes must be perfect for the audience to believe the event or action could be real. Lots of work takes place post production at separate studios where the film is edited and changed. If any changes are made then the sequence must flow together in perfect harmony which the director usually oversees the work during the process.

All throughout the history of movie making there has been visual effects used in the production of films. Even in some of the oldest films known they have used some form of the technique. Special production supervisors are usually in charge of the choreography and editing process. Everything from amateur film makers to broadway musicals have used the process in some form.

Background elements are often added to a scene that can include photographs or digital animations. Digital animations are used by lots of the big name studios to produce movies and cartoons. Some use three dimensional filming in the production process of modern movies.
