Taking Awesome Black and White Photos

By Jocelyn Kinder

With the technology available today, color photographs are the norm but many photographers enjoy the challenge of the black and white photo. Due to the nature of the film, the black and white photo will literally last for centuries while the color photograph will fade out over time. This may be one reason so many modern photographers enjoy using the black and white medium for their photographs. For fine arts prints, black and white photography can be easily reproduced.

The advantages to taking black and white photos.

Photography students are taught to use black and white as a medium to spot problems in the photos they take. When photos are without color any mistakes become much more apparent and easier to spot.

Using black and white photography means having to learn how to develop your film. Serious students should know how to accomplish this. Amateur photographers might use a color photograph and use a software to change it into a grayscale image. When the images are captured in black and white it gives the photographer and the viewer a different perspective on the images.

The moods in your photos can be very pronounced when there's an absence of color. The lighting that is used is extremely important and can create different feelings according to the way the lighting is used. The elements of the pictures will be emphasized by the lack of color. The overall effect becomes very dramatic.

Producing the photos that you want with film.

The speed of the film will change the appearance of the image. 100 or 200 are the most common speeds and have a very small grain. However if you use 3200 speed film there is a lot more grain or small particles that make up the photographic emulsion and the overall image you produce will have a moody kind of feeling to it. You will figure out your desired effect by experimenting with film. You should develop your own film when using black and white film.

How can I develop my own black and white film?

It is easy to develop you own film even if you live in an apartment. You will need to find a film developing powder, a place to mix chemicals, good ventilation and a dark room. The developer is usually very simple and comes with good directions.

Using the common 35mm film works very well and gives you the capability of enlarging to almost any size you would like without compromising the quality of the image. To develop the film you will need the developer but you will need reels on which you will be threading the film you develop which are about twenty dollars each. You will also need to purchase containers that will keep light out of your developer. These need to remain in a dry, cool environment. You also will need to find a fixer to let the film open to light, and you can reuse this. This must be handled carefully. The stuff that develops and prints your image is the soap bath. Handle this carefully, too. Your dark space for developing the film needs a red light. If the chemical goes bad during development, it will cause the solution to turn purple. The soap bath needs a well ventilated space before it is opened. You can probably see that making your own dark room is neither hard nor expensive. Following directions will maintain a nice dark room for your work.
