Always bring your camera with you. First rule "don't go anywhere without your camera, some spare batteries and your memory devices. You do not really know when you will see the opportunity to capture some great stills so it is better to be prepared all of the time.

Know the importance of white balance settings. Some people don't really comprehend the significance of white balance so they just leave their camera settings to automated. But this is an enormous no-no. Your camera's automated setting isn't 100% reliable so it's best to use the presets that correctly match the lighting conditions you are shooting on. Ask your camera's instruction manual to find out more about choosing the right presets.

- To flash or not to flash. Never take peoples stills under bright, cruel lighting conditions for it may cast ugly shadows behind your subject or result in excessively exposed photos. Use your flash only when it's actually needed

- Focus. Don't just shoot without picking an important point of interest. Remember, each photo should focus on a specific subject to make the shot more engaging

- Use your zoom wisely. Lots of folk shoot footage with their subject on one side and lots of space around it. Instead of doing this, try utilising your zoom instead and fill your frame with your subject. You will get way better photos that way.
