By Jerome TK Huntington

Congratulations; this is the very first step to become a great photographer! You may find yourself intimidated by the sheer breadth of information available to you. Read on for some simple tips for a beginner that will let you see a dramatic improvement in your pictures.

Framing is a very important aspect of photography. Zoom in on your subject or the most important part of the photo and cut out extraneous objects from the background. By using the zoom feature you can clear up any unwanted clutter and eliminate any unwanted focal points.

In most instances, your subject will be looking right at the camera. For some unique pictures, try to have your subject look off the camera, have them focus on something outside the field of view of the camera. You could have them look at something in the frame, such as a person or flower too.

Enhance the final look of your photos by cropping them in appropriate places. Perhaps your photo is perfect except for a sock lying on the floor in the background. Another time, this feature is convenient is if your subject is not properly centered. You can easily fix those through cropping the image later.

Watch out for under or overexposure if you want to take good photos. If you can comprehend the histogram of your camera, you will begin to appreciate these differences. This will measure your shot exposure and it lets you know if the picture is the right exposure.

You can create unique photographs by shooting from varying angles. Anyone can see a scene head-on and take a photo of it. Try to find fun and interesting angles to approach the scene. First, attempt from higher positions, and then move lower. Try composing a shot on the diagonal or from the side to make it more interesting.

Before you begin shooting, you should decide on a concept for your photos. It is important to plan out your shot ahead of time. Photography is part technical skill and part art, and well-thought out plans and detailed attention definitely produce better shots. By treating your pictures more seriously, you will see a big improvement in the photos.

If you like the creative feeling an old camera gives you, consider buying some vintage gear in a second hand shop. Consider purchasing black and white film that has an ISO of 200 to create especially dramatic pictures. By getting your single prints on multiple types of paper, you can view the differences and decide which you prefer.

You can play around with the different shutter speeds to get cool effects. For instance, if your subjects are in motion choose a faster shutter speed. This will give you that split second timing that is necessary to capture your moving subject. This is particularly useful when you are taking pictures of a sporting event. Opening the shutter for a longer time can also produce interesting effects, showing motion through a blurred effect. You can photograph streams and waterfalls using this setting.

Make sure you use optical zoom rather than digital zoom if you want to take close-up shots. Cameras will usually let you zoom closer and closer optically until the digital zoom takes over. The problem is that this compromises the overall picture quality. Digital mode shows these pixels in the picture that bring down the quality of the image. Check your camera manual to find out how to disable this feature in your particular model.

Your camera has a feature called focus-lock, and you should take the time to learn how to use it. With most cameras pre-set to focus at the frame's center, you will have to adjust the focus if you want it elsewhere. This is usually accomplished by first making sure the object is in the center and pressing the shutter only halfway down. Then you move the camera so you can have it framed the way you want it. Continue pushing the shutter button until the shot is taken.

There is a wide variety of editing software available for photos. You can either purchase or download it for free. Have some fun experimenting with it! Professional photographers make software adjustments to their pictures all the time, so you need not feel like you are "cheating" in any way if you make use of photo editing software to improve your pictures. This can elevate the impact of any photograph. with only some tweaks and corrections.

Now, you should have some new techniques to try out on your next pictures. Implementing new ideas into your process helps to keep your photographs fresh and dynamic. Keep persevering, and you will transform your photos into true art.
