Television Antennas Grant Viewers To See Free High Definition

By George Binder

Although the digital television signal changes in the US were completed a few years ago, many people may not be aware that with TV antenna installations, they are able to receive HDTV at no cost. These signals are broadcast through each of the local stations and offer a wide variety of programming. There is no monthly charge and the pictures received on the HDTV set are the same high quality viewers have come to expect through cable television or use of a blue ray player.

Many people seem to have forgotten that there was a time when all televisions received their signals through antennas. Homes near the broadcast antennas of the stations often had decent picture quality on their black and white televisions. Those located over 25 miles from the antennas broadcasting the signals sometimes had difficulty in picking up a good feed. With the introduction of color television, the problems became even worse. In the early 60s cable television began to grow in popularity. Many subscribers were happy to pay an additional five dollars per month for the better quality pictures.

Over time, the cable networks grew and satellite television was introduced. Many homes had access to hundreds of channels, premium channels and special interest channels. With each new change in the lineup, the cost of cable television increased. Many homes now pay the cable company over $100 per month.

In the rush to get more channels that were available 24/7, many television fans forgot about the free television that was still available. The local stations continued to send out their analogue signals and made the conversion. They broadcast the signals but customers have not cut the ties with the cable companies.

One of the advantages of the digital conversion is that pictures from rooftop antennas are better than ever. Pictures are free of snow and shadows. HDTV pictures are of the same quality as those received through satellite or cable in most instances. Occasionally on the fringe, they may tend to digitize, but the problem can usually be solved by installing a higher-grade antennas.

Other than installation fee, there is no monthly service charge for persons using antennas to get free television service. Television viewers see the same local programming that they would if using cable. HDTV can be viewed at no cost to the consumer.

Viewers will find that many of the locally broadcast stations are showing their favorite shows. In many locations, viewers will notice little difference as their favorites are broadcast through free television. While there may not be twenty sports stations, there will be a sufficient number to follow many of the favorite teams.

While some older homes may still have antennas installed on the rooftop, many newer homes never had them installed. Some of the older devices will have corroded to the point that they need to be replaced in order to get the best possible picture. Even in areas where rooftop antennas are not allowed, there are options that allow occupants to receive free television clearly. In any of these cases, TV antenna installations can provide the television viewer with the capability of watching free television once again.
