Racing Move: Making an El Primo One!

By Erica Smith

Today's technology makes it possible for almost anybody to produce a fantastic racing movie. Nonetheless a significant quantity of content is produced which has virtually no importance to the viewer. Here, what we're discussing is the onboard or in-car racing movie, not the large production ones. Just how do you make a racing film that captures the imagination of the observer, but exhibits all the crucial action on course?

Everyone understands that race car drivers make the most interesting footage. Even so, the quality of production is usually poor, even with the latest high definition cameras. Step one is pretty simple in principle but hard in practice, that is, mounting the digital camera correctly. Without a camera mount that protects the camera from the massive noise of a race car and aims it in the correct location, it's very hard to record the images you want. At the beginning you must purchase a good camera mount and place it in the dash area, near the mirrors, or the hood so it captures the most exciting passes.

Next is the racing movie content. This includes not only the video component, but the sound mixing and analysis information as well. Making sure you have the video pointed in the right direction and it's capturing dynamic racing action, is this enough? Most people go with the loud engine noise with screeching tires concept. This is great assuming your car has a powerful sound like a American iron. There are other alternatives for sound as well. You could narrate to make an instruction video or intend remember all the important details of the race. Or you could make a music video out of it by copying over a song with the appropriate intensity level.

Do you have a racing data analysis system? Most of these tools allow you to include a track g-force video overlay to your racing movie, showing RPM, G-forces, braking, gears, etc.. Unless you are making a technical race driving instruction, however, you should be conservative with these types of gimmicks because they can cause distactions from the racing itself. Be conservative with overlays.

Finally, if your racing movie will be for advertising you should add a title, intro, and conclusion featuring your company with contact information, logo, website, etc. Motion pictures are an excellent way to promote your product or service. The most important thing is to create an awesome racing movie that has a chance to go viral, or hopefully gets sent all over the world.
