The Apple ipad has arrived and almost immediately, its critics dismissed it as a glorified ipod touch. Yet on closer inspection, it seems that this accusation was far from the truth. Size isn't its only upgrade.
Physically, the ipad is extremely thin measuring only 1,5 inches in width making it easier to grasp in the hand. The screen is a whopping 9.7 inches which leads to very easy viewing be it text or video. The weight though, at 1.5 lbs, may be a bit overbearing for someone trying to hold it in one hand while typing with the other or if he/she needs to support it for long periods of time.
Having said that, however, the ipad is an incredible power efficient device. By using ARM technology, Apple have made it so all functions like storage, audio play and 3D graphics are effectively on one chip thereby ensuring longer battery life as less energy is needed. When using it purely for wi-fi, the ipad, whether using the 16GB, 32GB or 64KB version, can provide up to ten hours of surf time.
It's easy to switch from an ipod touch to an ipad as most of the buttons and layouts are the same, just on a bigger scale. On the outside, there are the usual functions such as volume, power and headphone jack but there is also a screen orientation locker which is a real plus as it can be so frustrating to have a screen suddenly flip to another mode when you're least expecting it. It may seem slightly strange that there is no web cam included but there again, perhaps Apple wanted to keep this back for the second generation.
Any review of the ipad, though, would not be complete without a complete overhaul of the screen itself. The display is excellent. Vibrant colors and true blacks are complemented by a brightness which can be manually adjusted to suit a person with even the most sensitive eyes. This adjuster makes it easier to read long swathes of text and is less tiring on the eyes. IPS(In-plane switching), however, should make you cautious about reading top secret messages on the bus home as this allows you to read the screen from practically any angle.
There are now many more tools available such as the virtual keyboard and the tap and hold feature. The keyboard allows you to type in far more quickly due to its larger size in landscape mode and any text will be finished in the blink of an eye (dependent on your typing skills, of course)while the tap and hold feature, although not new, is a welcome addition for the extra interactivity it brings.
When it comes to apps, the ipad has apps which have been written for sole use on the ipad but that doesn't mean someone switching from an ipod touch would have to start buying a whole new library. Most apps are compatible yet the graphics will appear a little shaky due to the bigger size screen.
The Apple ipad has already made its mark globally and the world is already looking forward to the next installment from Apple.
