Steps Of Opening California Apparel Photography Business

By Diane Fisher

Creating effective and appealing clothes images requires some expertise. Normally, people see models on billboards advertising a particular clothing line, but they have no idea how the shooting takes place. If you are interested in the fashion industry and you want to start your own California apparel photography business, there are several steps that you should follow. This business is doing well in big cities and even smaller towns. Therefore, all you need is capital and the will to run the business. If you have no photo shooting skills, it is wise to attend some training.

When you plan to open such a business, there are various statutory requirements that you should meet. In most municipalities, you are required to have a license and a permit for you to be allowed to run your company in peace. Make sure you meet these requirements, then obtain insurance. A business without coverage can die any time whenever accidents like fire outbreak occur.

After you have met all the necessary statutory requirements, it is time to set up your business. You cannot shoot without a model. Therefore, you need to look for a model. To make your shots more appealing, it is advisable to use live models. Decide whether you want to pick a male or female, or both. Also, when selecting the model, you must check how the clothes look on him or her and whether the models will work for you for the long term.

Once you have selected the model that you want, start setting up your space. The space you choose will depend on the situation. More so, space should be large enough for the model to move around when following your cues. However, space should not be too large. Therefore, you have to designate backdrop boundaries so that the model stays in the frame.

The next thing is creating the right lighting. Your shooting setup should have a light that is neither too dim nor too bright. Thus, you should find a way of mimicking the softness of natural light from windows. You can use soft boxes that can do this naturally, or umbrellas and speed lights. However, speed lights can be too direct and harsh.

Once you have attained the perfect lighting and the backdrop set up is complete, start positioning your model. Start explaining your vision to the model and prepare him/her in the shooting area to achieve your vision. Make sure your model stands exactly where you want them to stand by placing an X on the surface directly facing your camera.

When you start shooting, it is wise to use wide framing. This leaves enough space at the edges. Therefore, you can start cropping and editing the images later after the shooting. Also, make sure that the models understand your cues and pose the way you want.

After the shooting, it is time to start editing the images. This is the hardest part and requires a lot of time. Since you will be tired of shooting, you can decide to hire an expert to do the editing work for you. However, if you prefer to work on your own, you need time.
