How To Spot Dating App Scams

By Douglas Scott

Scamming is a popular cybercrime mostly conducted on social media sites. Scams are designed to rob people of their money, get access to financial information and personal details for the wrong reasons. The most affected individuals are found in online dating networks. Although most sites claim to review their members, it is difficult to guarantee users of maximum safety from dating app scams. Scammers have a way of getting their way to social networks.

Many individuals fall prey to scamming because they do not know anything about scammers. Although scammers are not created equal, the motive behind scamming does not change. People scam to steal money, get access to credit card details and personal details. Remember, no one is safe from online scams. All you can do is be careful when sharing information with other online users. Here are some tips to identify a scammer who presents himself or herself as a potential partner.

Old women are at high risk of online scams due to various factors. They portray vulnerability and have little knowledge about technology. A divorced or widowed woman is willing to take risks to start a relationship with the first person they meet. Scammers know this fact and take advantage of lonely individuals to get money. Older individuals do not have basic skills in technology, therefore, have a hard time detecting fraudulent activities.

It is obvious that you would be looking for a partner with a positive attitude and charming attributes. Online scammers do not possess anything you would want in a partner. They are dramatic, erratic and possess odd behaviors. Be cautious when a person asks to communicate via email or text. If they insist you share personal details and confess to loving you after a short period, do not fall for the catch. It is obvious you are dealing with an online scam.

Profile pictures tell a lot about an individual, make an effort to review profile photos posted on dating sites. In most cases, scammers post photos that do not match details such as location, age, and height. They upload photos of other people from social media platforms. If you feel suspicious of photos, save a copy and run it on Google reverse image search. This helps you determine if photos are legit or stolen from other innocent individuals on social media sites.

Language is a factor many online users overlook when dating online. It is always good to check for spelling errors or grammar mistakes. It is normal for an individual to spell one word incorrectly, multiple mistakes proof the person is not who they claim to be. Conmen have poor grammar and with time they contradict their own story.

Online conmen have a habit of bailing out on dates. The idea of meeting physically makes them uncomfortable, forcing them to give false excuses. In case they agree to show up for a date, scammers ask victims to pay for flight tickets or taxi.

Scammers manipulate their victims to ensure they get what they want. It is normal to come across words like I thought you were in love or we should trust one another for the relationship to work. To avoid such scams, do not share too much personal information on dating apps.
