Choosing Repurposed Home Decor To Save Money

By Sharon Anderson

Many people seek ways to improve their home interior for a number of reasons. While some tend to think of decor as strictly visual, some may renovate their home interior as a way to create more space. Another trend that is catching on is repurposed home decor items, which may come from a number of resources.

Often people think of repurposing as buying used items from a garage sale or outdoor market and making something different. Sometimes an interior decorator may convert a piece of hardware, like an industrial chain, and make it part of a modern monochrome design theme. It can also be considered the use of materials that are are not toxic to the environment when it is no longer of use.

This is part of the sustainable lifestyles that are encouraging manufacturers and designers found to use materials that are free of toxins. More consumers are looking to find more items made from hemp or recycled materials that can withstand normal use. There are new materials coming out that are not only practical but are inexpensive.

No longer do these items come in drab colors or shapes that are not functional or lack a visual aesthetic. Not only are the modern designs practical but are congruent with most interior decor styles. As more individuals become aware of sustainable living benefits, more products for consumer use will become available and affordable for many.

Recycling materials is not a new concept, as it is common with large families or those who want to stretch their money a little further. Clothes that could not be passed down to a younger family member were made into kitchen accessories like oven mitts or table cloths. Artisans have found a way to make this trendy in a world that is still trying to save money on a regular basis.

Denim is one fabric that is popular because of its durability and unique texture. Formal attire that no longer fits or is out of style can be converted into window dressing or as part of a table place set. There are a multitude of craft books and magazines that show anyone how to do create something new in a matter of hours. Some projects do not even require the use of a sewing machine or a pattern.

For those who are not interested in creating, there are a numbers of designers who specialize in converting old items into a one of a kind piece that looks fantastic. They may dye the fabric and modern color or combine it with like materials that are economically sound. Many designers have online galleries and some are happy to share their knowledge of green living or repurposing with others. Creative types may also find these design sites inspirational.

Over time, people will come up with new ways to use old items again. For some, this is the only way to live, as old drawers may be used as a planter or a ladder may be painted another color and used as vertical storage. Then there are those who just feel good by making a physical donation to their local nonprofit, knowing it will make the life of someone else easier.
