Figurative And Genre Art And Their Impact To Modern Society

By Janine Hughes

One of the things that speaks highly of a societys identity are the artworks that are produced from the place. As a form of expression, they do not only embody the thoughts of the artist. They are also great symbolism of the culture and traditions that are passed by from generations to generations.

Most of the masterpieces that we see at present are the works of people who are no longer around. Yet, look at their market value and the appreciation that they receive from people across the world. Figurative and genre art is the same. They may not longer be mainstream nowadays considering that graphic design and digital art are becoming more popular but their beauty and importance remained.

To an untrained eye, figurative and genre may just look the same. Their themes, being that of ordinary human experience and practices are the same. They both center on people and the things that they do. What differentiates them however is the mode on how they are done. Genre art presents a clear image of a happening whereas figurative can be representational and can be done in abstract form.

Despite their age, there remains a profound beauty among these artworks. Some may attribute it to the manner by which it is done. Others say it is due to the time spent in making it. And then there are some who believes that it is because of the message that the paintings portray. Actually, they could be the combination of all of these factors.

You may find the painting of different scenarios as easy. As long as you have something that you can use as a guide, you can go ahead and paint. The challenge however is how to make it look appealing. It is difficult to achieve something when you are both concerned about the message and the aesthetics. Sometimes, you just need to let the other flow.

The personal experience of the artist can impact a lot to his works. The life that he lived can influence how he perceived things. What others may see as peaceful may mean ominous to someone who grew up in a poverty stricken society, where peace and comfort are things that only the rich have access to.

And of course there is the issue of an artists bias. Anyone who feels strongly about something will most likely manifest it to his works. While they could not be as dominant as the other factors, they will show. For instance, a painter who values the role of females in the society may paint a picture of women dancing in circles.

Every work of art is open to interpretation. There could be various explanations on its general meaning but the bottom line is, everyone can place a meaning to anything. After all, works of art impacts different people differently. What one sees as beautiful may look insulting to others.

If you have seen an actual work done by the greatest artists of all times, you will get an idea why they are highly acclaimed like they do. Their beauty is more than just the image. The message and the emotion all have something to say.
