The pair would have to work with each other in order to form a good dialogue.
Once the students are already confident with scripts, then they can actually perform in front of a crowd. Now what the instructor can do is that he can give each student a script and let each of them perform in front of their classmates. From there, the teacher will give his comments on each of their performances so that they can improve.
Now the end goal of the class would usually be a full scale stage play. So after the students have learned the basics, then they will work together to make a play. From there, they will be able to apply everything that they learned in the class and perform in front of a whole audience.
