There are some who have a very particular taste in music. CBGB band is better known as new wave and American Punk music. Its founder was Hilly Kristal, his birth name was Hillel. He was born in 1931 on the 23rd September and about years later he opened a new club. Not long after this the club had to close its doors as he had an argument with the landlord about rent.
When he was born his family decided to move to New Jersey where he studied music and then attended a music school in Philadelphia. He also spent quite a bit of time in the marines. He sang with a group of men in a choir and appeared on the stage at Radio City Music Hall. He later became the manager of a jazz club in a residential neighborhood in Lower Manhattan.
She was born in December 1946 and is a singer and songwriter as well as a poet and visual artist. People know her better as the Godmother of Punk. One of her well known songs "Because the Night" was written with the help of Bruce Springsteen. It was so well liked that it got to number 13 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1978.
In 2007 she was inducted into the well known rock and Roll Hall of fame by the French Ministry of Culture. She went on to win the National Book Award in November 2010. She was born in Chicago and her father worked at a Honeywell Plant. This is a global company that makes a variety of different products as well as aerospace systems for many different clients. There are now over 130 000 workers all around the world with about 58 000 in the United States alone.
Her mother was a waitress with an Irish heritage. In her early childhood she lived in an area close to Philadelphia before moving with the family to New Jersey. Her mother was a Jehovah's Witness so naturally she had a very religious upbringing. When she turned twelve her interests started in Tibetan Buddhism. As she grew older she listened to the records by Harry Belafonte and Patience and Prudence. After she graduated from school in 1964 she worked in a factory where she fell pregnant and decided to give her child up for adoption.
During the years 1974 and 1979 she started to perform on stage with Lenny Kaye and later a band was formed. Their first single "Hey Joe" was recorded with the help of Sam Wagstaff. They were then signed by Clive Davis and produced "Horses" and this helped to fuse punk rock and poetry together.
In the 1930s the Monroe Brothers were very popular as they sang most of their songs in duet. Later they split up and both formed bands of their own. Billy stayed in his home town and his new band started a new kind of country music.
The band has an annual festival that is for free in Time Square and Central Park where thousands of people are able to enjoy this music. There is now a movie about the founder and how the club first came about. Unfortunately this was received with some rather cruel reviews.
