Make Your Backpacking Trip More Memorable With A Portable Guitar

By Essie Osborn

Backpacking is becoming more popular, not only among school leavers but also among older people who are in between careers or need to take a sabbatical. It provides a more authentic experience of local cultures than an all-inclusive package tour would. When you go backpacking, you learn to get by with less but one item that can enrich your experience is a portable guitar.

By their very nature, guitars are portable. However, some are specifically designed with travel in mind. A travel guitar is smaller than the usual size for these instruments. Unlike a ukulele, which produces a more high-pitched sound, it sounds just like a regular guitar.

The benefits of travel guitars are evident as soon as you board your flight to your destination. Because they normally fit within the parameters of allowable hand luggage, you don't have to check them into the hold. This means that there's a smaller risk that they'll sustain damage during the loading or unloading of luggage. Moreover, their lightness means that you won't have to pay excess-baggage fees.

One of the joys of backpacking is that instead of traveling in air-conditioned tour buses, you normally travel in local modes of transport. These tend to be rickety buses or trucks or, in some areas, boats. While people can, and do, take anything imaginable onto these vehicles, from furniture to livestock, larger pieces of luggage normally have to go onto the luggage tack on the roof. This can slow you down and you don't get to keep an eye on your belongings either, but a travel-sized instrument can be kept with you instead.

You may be spending some time hiking or trekking. This is another time when you'll be grateful for only carrying a small instrument with you. Not only is it light and easy to carry but it gives you a way to pass the time around the campfire at night, especially when you're far away from civilization, WiFi connections and clubs.

Having a musical instrument with you helps you to be more social too. You'll make new friends at the hostels where you'll be staying as everyone gathers to sing along. However, if you need some peace, you can always take your guitar and go sit on a deck to watch the sunset, on the banks of a great river or in a hammock on the beach. You'll cherish these memories forever.

Taking a musical instrument along on your journey can even help you finance your trip. In many backpacking towns, bar and restaurant owners are always looking for live entertainment and if you're good enough, they might pay you to play at their establishments while you're in town. You can even go busking at a marketplace or on the sidewalks if your funds are running low.

You may be able to find travel guitars at your local music store. However, there's a wider variety to be had online. You may even commission a luthier to specially build you one. Whichever way you find the instrument of your choice, it's one of the best investments you can make.
