By Delroy Wilkins

When you ask music lovers to define the term grove, majority will find it hard coming up with the right words to describe it. The main reason for this is that groove usually relates to the feeling listening to music evokes. While finding the exact words to define groove in hip hop, groove is created by a couple of things. Every beat producer wants to incorporate a unique form of groove within their sounds. For the beginner, finding the right groove might take time. Professionals on the other hand have found ways of incorporating groove within their sounds.

Groove can best be described as the binding force within a beat that brings about rhythm and harmony. It's the cohesive force that brings together the different parts of the beat. Like with other elements within the beat, groove is easily recognizable. The mind and body usually responds to the groove found within a hip hop beat. This is also the case with other music genres. Each music genre has its way of creating groove. However, regardless of genre, without groove, music is not pleasant to listen to.

The different elements of a hip hop beat are created using different instruments. For example, rhythm is created by the drums, melody from the pads and, lead filling in the rest. The groove functions as the binding force bringing these elements together into a cohesive unit.

The best way to describe a groove is like a wave. A wave in the ocean will get your body moving. Your body will move more when the waves are stronger and faster. When the waves are slow and calm, your body sways much slower too. A groove in music will move the body in the same ways. Fast grooves will have people moving rapidly and with high energy. A mellow groove will get people rocking in a much slower and closer way.

A groove can be used in various parts of your beats. You can set it out in the beginning to help lead into the intro or you can use it to worked into the chorus and it can extend the verse. A groove can be used in different tempos to help fill your music out completely.

Many beginners will not understand the importance of the groove in their beats. They will leave it out and wonder why people stop listening to their music before it is done. If you take the time to establish the groove in your music, you will get people to listen to it with their whole body.
