How To Make Hip Hop Instrumentals: The Groove

By Delroy Wilkins

If you ask people to define groove in music, they might have a hard time coming up with the words that they think will fit. That is because often times a groove is about the feeling that the music creates. While it may not be easy to define what the groove of a hip hop beat is, it is made up of some very specific things. Beginners will have time finding the right groove for their beats. Professionals know how important the groove is and know what it takes to create it.

The groove is what provides both the rhythm and the harmony for the beats. It is the thing that ties the music together into a single beat. The groove is as recognizable as any other part in the beats. People's body responds to the groove in the hip hop beats, but you can find a groove in any type of music. The way that music generates it grooves varies depending on the genre. No matter what though, all songs need to have some type of groove if they want to be something people will listen to.

The different elements of a hip hop beat are created using different instruments. For example, rhythm is created by the drums, melody from the pads and, lead filling in the rest. The groove functions as the binding force bringing these elements together into a cohesive unit.

An ocean wave is perhaps the best way of describing groove. A wave will set into motion anything on its path. More movement will be experienced as the wave becomes larger and stronger. The contrary is true for slow moving and small waves. Groove in music will also set the body in motion in similar ways. A fast groove will get people dancing fast. Mellow grooves on the other hand will get people dancing in a more relaxed manner.

Groove can be incorporated within different parts of the track. You can use it initially at the intro grabbing your listener's attention. You can also work it into the chorus or use it to extend the verses. You can also vary the groove by using different tempos to give the track a complete feel.

Most beginners fail to understand the importance of incorporating grove within their tracks. Leaving it out can result in listeners completely avoiding their tracks. Taking time to learn about groove and incorporating it within tracks is the best way to ensure that listeners find music pleasant to dance to.
