A Review Of The Power Of Art

By Cathy Mercer

The most common and major form of art is visual art which is defined as an experience or object made through imagination or skill. It constitutes several media including photography, drawing, painting, decoration among others. Other forms of the same include music, theatre, dance and literature. The power of art should never be underestimated. Creative works are a tool that can get so much done in many circumstances.

For a long time, art has been viewed as an expression of emotion, communication or imitation. Sometimes this field has been grouped together with science and religion since it also specially involves the human mind. Owing to the dynamic views concerning art, it is generally described as imagination and creativity in action. Aesthetics is a branch of philosophy that tackles the interpretation, nature and creativity of graphic works.

Creative works may take various forms. The form is merely a shape that is taken by the piece of art as determined by the kind of medium that is used to create it. Forms are broadly classified as either two-dimensional or three dimensional. Works that may be created in two dimensions include paintings and pictures while those that are created in three dimensions include sculptures. In some cases the two forms may be combined.

For a sense of identity, these professionals employ unique styles. While some may choose to use a specific material such as say bronze, gold or silver for their work, others restrict themselves to using particular colours, shapes and texture as a personal signature. The work itself may also contain special uniqueness in the manner of presentation in a manner that various creators can be distinguished.

Art serves several different functions and purpose which make it almost impossible to compress in to a single idea. For simplicity, these are classified in to motivated and non motivated purposes. Non motivated forms are those restricted to human beings. They are the everyday things that happen in our life as part of human nature and instinct. These non-motivated forms provide an opportunity for one to outwardly express imagination without use of grammar.

Motivated functions include those consciously intended by the creator. These could simply be a form of communicating ideas, feelings and moods to external parties. They may also be a form of illustrating science. In addition, art serves as a kind of entertainment through providing mind relaxation to viewers. Visual images have also been used to bring about change in the political system of a given country or region.

Creative works have also been used as a form of criticism besides the purpose of bringing political change. A good example is street graffiti which is illegal in most countries. Graffiti are typically drawn on accessible areas such as buses, walls, bridges and trains. They have been used on many occasions to make social issues known to the public. Several artistic events have been used to educate the public on issues such as cancer, autism and environmental conservation among others.

How accessible are creative works to the public? Possession of high quality pieces are an expression of wealth and class. This is especially true for the items made using expensive material such as gold as the main medium. Galleries and displays are also available for the public to appreciate the beauty and skill involved in this field. With all these in mind, the power of art can never be underestimated.
