Learning About Different Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Atlanta Styles

By Lila Barry

Brazilian jiu iitsu is a form of martial arts, which is based on ground fighting. It is different from other fighting styles because it teaches students how to fight from their back. Today, nearly all mixed martial arts fighters train in brazilian jiu jitsu Atlanta, because it has proven to be very effective.

This style of fighting was created four hundred years ago in India. It was developed by Buddhist monks that were mainly peaceful but were often attacked for spreading their religion. They created it so that they could defend themselves against attackers. This style of fighting involved grappling to subdue opponents without the need for killing them. It eventually spread to places like Japan where people further developed the art form.

The development of the modern form of fighting is credited greatly to the family of Gastao Gracie from Brazil. The Gracie family learned much of their fighting from Judo master Mitsuyo Maeda. One of the sons of the Gracie family, Helio Gracie, decided to develop the judo taught by Maeda, because it concentrated mostly on brute strength, and since Helio was smaller than his brother, he often felt disadvantaged.

Helio Gracie then refined the Maeda judo fighting style into a style where one can fight from their back on the ground. This style also teaches how to do takedowns, takedown defense and ground control, along with the art of submissions. Submissions are holds that cut off the air supply of your opponent, such as chokes, or takes advantage of a certain joint, such as armbars.

Fighters who are trained in this art often prefer fighting from a position known as the guard. The guard position is a maneuver that involves wrapping your legs around your opponent to decrease their movement. The aim of the fighters is to take their opponent down or to escape their guard by using side control movements or the mount position, which involves sitting on their ribs or chest.

Royce Gracie is credited with making Brazilian jiu jitsu a mainstream sport, by competing in tournaments such as the Ultimate Fighting Championship fights. He showed off his skills in November 1993, when he won the first UFC tournament. Royce defeated fighters much heavier then himself, and he was only 170-pounds. He used the techniques taught by his father and won three UFC tournaments in a short span of time. Since then, there have been many variations developed by some other fights.

As with other martial arts, jiu jitsu has varying belts that are awarded to students. All students begin with a white belt and then progress to a blue belt after one to two years. They may then progress to a purple belt after two to three years and then a brown belt after five years of training. The black belt is the highest ranking belt in the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu tier.

If you are studying this fighting art, not only do you learn discipline, but you can improve your overall health as well. This is because brazilian jiu jitsu Atlanta has long been used as exercise to strengthen ones arms, legs or back. It can help increase cardiovascular activity for those who want to lead an active lifestyle.
