By Vicki Diaz

How to get started in acting and become a professional in the same is a major determinant of how far your career will go and new actors are advised that an agent is the foremost thing that they should look out for. Before approaching an agent, you should make sure that you are up to standards in role play. This can be from school events and festivals of all kinds.

First thing you should know is that you should take you career in the right perspective, the career should be taken as a business entity and not charity work. Many people commit this mistake and get into the career just for fun and fame and then end up with nothing in the long run. You should take yourself as a product being brought to offer in the business.

The career is like your investment and you should therefore not be afraid to use all your energy and money in getting a good agent. Your devotion to getting an agent should not be destructed by those claiming to be connected with agents: they can however supplement your search for a good agent. Getting an agent is the easiest way to getting a role in a play as they are allowed ninety days by law to get a client a role otherwise the client is free to move and given that no agent wants to lose clients, you will secure a role as soon as you hire the services of an agent.

As you progress in your career and you want to remain relevant, then you should look for a representative. A representative is not necessary during the initial stages but as you progress it should be your primary consideration. A representative increases your chances of getting roles whose prices are competitive as they are usually in contact with the major producers and play directors.

Getting the services of a high level agent is not an easy task but the existence of agencies tends to make work easier. There is however fake agencies who are there to make a fortune out of the ignorance of upcoming artists. Below are some of the things you should know about agents and agencies.

You should have in mind that agent should never ask money (apart from the orientation fee that is used to market your work) from you in order to represent you. They instead charge a commission usually of about ten to twenty percent on what you will agree with the employer after signing you a contract. Not all companies however charge the orientation fee and if charged, it is a onetime affair so if somebody ever asks you for money so as to represent you, get away as fast as you can before you become a victim of fraud.

Despite the background education and experience, upcoming actors who have additional skills tend to have more advantage than others when it comes to being awarded a role to play. An actor with skills like arrow shooting for example will have high chances of being awarded a role to play as an arrow shooter than that person without such skills. Learning such skills will therefore give you an advantage in securing a job.

It is important to note that getting a good head shot can be very hard yet it is a very important document in the acting industry. This is mainly due to the fact that getting good photographers is hard as majority of them are not experienced. You should therefore research about the photographers as much as you can as this would determine how to get started in acting.
