General Information Regarding Backflow Device

By Vicki Diaz

A backflow device, also known as a backflow prevention device or assembly, keeps the potable water supply from becoming polluted or contaminated as a result of backflow. These units are mostly applied in the plumbing industry. They are part of water systems.

In water supply systems, the liquid is usually kept at a specific pressure level. This is what allows it to flow from the fixtures of a property, such as the tap and shower. If the pressure is reduced or fails for some reason, the lowered pipe pressure may inhibit contaminated water to be brought into a system.

Usually frozen pipes, break in water mains, or high demand is to blame for the change in pressure. The contaminated water gets into the system may come from different sources. Often times this water comes from storage, the ground or another source.

Backflow is basically the reversal of liquid, gas or solid into the potable water. The preventer units are provided to keep this from happening. Such units are especially important when toxic chemicals are present, which is often the case in commercial and industrial industries. The dangers are increased in these situations and people may be put at high risk of problems.

An effective and simple technique used for prevention is air gaps. This is an open space that is left between a device that connects to the plumbing system and the place where the liquid collects. Specialized preventer valves may also be used in certain parts of the plumbing system. Usually this is done in areas where risk for contamination is high. Check valves are applicable and commonly used, but there are other complex devices that may be required.

To prevent contamination that is a the result of pressure, an air gap or prevention unit is suggested between a delivery destination of water and storage. In many countries, these prevention devices are mandated by law. They must be installed and done so in accordance with plumbing and building rules in their jurisdiction. Most assemblies of this kind include test features and shut-off valves that are to be checked whenever the device is installed, relocated or repaired. It is a good idea to have these tested on a frequent basis too.

There are several different types of prevention devices that are available. Such units are available through most plumbing companies. These professionals usually install the systems for the owners. Some of the most common devices used in modern times: vacuum breaker, air gap, spill resistant pressure vacuum breaker assembly, atmospheric vacuum breaker, reduce pressure zone device, chemigation valve, reduced pressured principle valve, check valve, pressure vacuum breaker assembly, double check valve.

A backflow device is installed in most water systems. These structures are used in plumbing for their preventative capabilities. They are meant to keep the supply of water from being polluted or contaminated from backflow. In some instances, this problem can prove very dangerous to the health of people. There are an assortment of devices and models that can be applied by professionals as a preventative measure.
