Different Techniques Of Fiber Art

One kind of craft that uses different textiles is fiber art. This craft makes use of textiles such as cotton, silk, wool, yarn, fabric, and even synthetic fibers in making creative pieces. The craft primarily focuses on the type of materials used as well as the manual labor. At present, these creative works are used or displayed in many places.

There are numerous sources of fiber today. Majority comes from certain animals and plants. Sheep hair is needed to produce wool. Silkworm cocoons are primary sources of silk. Cotton seed pods also produce cotton. Now that technology is more advanced, synthetic materials like plastic acrylic can be produced. These materials have their own purposes and applications.

These materials undergo certain processes to be made into cloth or clothing. Apart from clothing, these are also used for a variety of crafting project. These can be used to produce creative pieces that have certain uses. Most of them are used for decorative purposes in homes and even displayed for art shows. Different techniques can be used to make such items.

Quilting is one popular technique in this craft. This is basically the process of making a quilt which involves sewing several layers of material together to make a thicker material that looks padded. This technique can be done by hand or with the use of a sewing machine. This also includes designing to create certain patterns that make the material look more decorative.

Another popular technique is knitting which uses thread or yarn to make cloth. There are many different styles for this technique to produce certain patterns and textures. Like quilting, this can be done both by hand and machine. This method can make clothing using various needles and yarns. Final pieces can come in different colors.

Rug hooking is technique which uses yarn loops. These loops are pulled to make items such as rugs and also wall hangings. In most cases, wool strips are the materials used in this technique. The designs can vary a lot from simple geometric patterns to much more complex ones like animals and flowers. Nowadays, designs are commercially produced as decors and collectibles.

Braiding is also a technique in which three or more strands of material are intertwined together. The resulting product is a material that looks narrow or long. Typically, a braid looks flat however there are complex types that will have different patterns, appearance, and structures. Braids are used to make ropes, decorative items, various artwork, and even hairstyle.

Felting is a process done by matting, pressing, and condensing woolen materials to create felt. This is a non woven cloth that comes in different types. There are felts that are soft and there are also tough types that are considered construction materials. These come in different sizes and colors and can be shaped into different forms.

Many artists around the world today are known for their masterpieces in fiber art. Some of them excel in using certain materials and specific techniques. There are also some individuals who appreciate this kind of craft that they collect various pieces. Collectors may use these items at home or simply put them on display.
