The Rebirth of Influential 90s Shoegaze Group My Bloody Valentine

By Eli Zeger

It was at 8 p.m. On February 2, 2013 that My Bloody Valentine became popular in the mainstream for being the band with the big site crash.

Forget the news of Justin Bieber's Ferrari getting pulled over in Los Angeles for going way over the speed limit - My Bloody Valentine was the big story of the night.

It all began at around 6:30 PM. when the band released their first album in over twenty years, titled "MBV", on their website. This development excited fans around the world and triggered a rush of thousands of the band's fans to invade the site at the same time, making it crash. The story of the crash became popular on websites like Google News and Twitter, but there's more to My Bloody Valentine than this event.

In the late 80's and early 90s, the Irish band My Bloody Valentine pioneered a category of music called "shoe-gaze". Their blend of distorted guitars and elements of dream pop has influenced contemporary artists such as France's M83 ("Midnight City", a top 10 Billboard rock hit), and Iceland's Sigur Ros ("Hoppipolla", featured in the films "Slumdog Millionare" and "We Bought A Zoo").

My Bloody Valentine's 1991 album "Loveless" is considered to be their most influential and critically praised release. It's listed in Mojo Magazine's "100 Greatest Guitar Albums", and is ranked at #221 in Rolling Stone Magazine's "500 Greatest Albums Of All Time".

The band will be touring through the United Kingdom this year and will be headlining music festivals such as Primavera Sound in Barcelona and Tokyo Rocks Festival in Japan.

My Bloody Valentine recorded "MBV" on analog gear (as opposed to digital technology), giving it the vintage 90s sound that excited their original fans. Key tracks include "She Found Now", "Who Sees You", and "Wonder 2". The album is available at Mybloodyvalentine.org (don't worry about any crashes, it has been fixed).
