Subwoofers: The Earley Years

By Fj Philben

Todays sub-woofers had there humble beginnings in the garage of a few entrepreneurial guys by the name of Arnold Nudell and Cary Christie, in the latter part of the 1960's. Mr Nudell was inventor and Mr Christie an aviator . They formed a Company named New Technology Enterprises, which was reorganized and reorganized as Infinity. The proto-type sub-woofer cabinet was an 18 inch Cerwin Vega containing the addition of a second winding to move the electrical signal to the enclosed amp . This initial system sold for just under $1800 in and around 1967 and around that time was some 40 percent higher than its closest competition , which during that time was a loud-speaker system. This first enclosed bass sub-woofer unit was called the Servo Statik 1.

Around the same period a local shop owner in LA was receiving problems from customers regarding the inability of the electrostatic speakers , the best of their kind in that period , to deal with the lower ranged bass heertz . Mr. J. Miller approached his business partner Ken Kreisel with the issue and Mr. Kriesel designed a powered subwoofer that could handle the lower pitch spectrum , the bass sub-woofer.

Subwoofers became widely recognized by the movie goers with their use in the motion picture "Earthquake." The Sensurround system was bought and set up in numerous film theaters throughout the US . This system comprised of several FIVE HUNDRED watt amplifiers that were regulated by soundtrack control tones. By the latter part of the 1970's, as an outcome of this ticket office hit movie , there were hundred movie theaters that were to set up the Sensurround system to offer a brand-new listening experience for their clients .

Unfortunately for many homeowners it was not until the inttoduction had the ability to utilize the reel to tape drives for tape-recording the lower frequencies , mass distribution it was the development of the smaller cassette/CD.

With the continued development and miniaturization of elements and modern technology , sub-woofers are regularly added to today'shome theatre systems and are reasonably economical compared with the first days of New Technology Enterprises back in the latter part of 60's.
