5 Ideas That Will Make You Think About Movies

By Anthony Buccellato

The entertainment industry is composed of many parts, but the largest portion is made up of movie production. Every year, thousands of different films are produced, and each one of them is trying to be the next successful film at the box office. Making a film is an incredibly complex task, and the successful completion of a film requires a vast number of moving parts and people to work together as one. There are literally hundreds of different jobs involved in making a movie, and all of them are important to get the job done. If there is one job that must be done right in every aspect in order for a movie to work, it is the job of movie executive. In order to better understand how important a movie executive is to making a successful movie, we'll take a closer look at the job description.

The most important job of a movie executive is to actually find the money to make a film. Money is required to fund every part of a film's production: film crews and actors all must be paid, equipment is very expensive, and the costs to edit and promote a film are astronomical. Movie executives acquire the money for a film in one of two ways: she may either have a production company for which she works that can be sold on a movie idea, or she can try contacting her vast network of rich financiers who may decide to fund a film they are particularly interested in. Much of an executive's time is spent wooing possible funding sources for films.

Because of the amount of power the movie executive has over the funding of a film, she may also take some control over the direction of the movie. Of course, the director is hired specifically to control the look and feel of the film.

A movie executive, though, is tasked with overseeing the entire production of the movie; if a particular part fo the film ends up being too strange, incoherent, or otherwise unmarketable, it is the executive producer's job to change the film. Movie executives have typically been working in the movie industry for many years, and over the course of their careers they start to get an instinctive feel for what kind of aesthetic will work for each movie. When it comes to finding the secret to box office success, a movie executive draws on this well of experience to figure out the best changes to make to editing, direction, and storyline.

Once a film is completed, the movie executive will then turn her attention to promoting the movie. Of all the advertising methods available for a film, movie executives usually choose TV commercials and actors coming on to talk shows.
