The Life And Music Of Dbanj

Dapo Daniel Oyebanjo, also known as Dbanj was born in 1980; he is a Nigerian singer-songwriter and producer. He has be the winner if numerous awards, which includes the award for Best African Artist at the MTV Europe Music Awards 2007. He also won artist of the Year at the MTV Africa Music Awards in 2009 and at the BET Awards 2011 for Best International Act.

D'banj used a mixture of his first and last name to create his stage name. He is probably most recognized for his hit song Oliver Twist, which is an Afrobeat/electronica fusion that is upbeat and funky. The single hit number one on the African chart in 2011 and was in the top ten in the UK in 2012. It also reached number 2 in the R and B chats in the United Kingdom.

D'banj was born on in the Nigerian city of Zaria to a army officer father, and highly religious mother. Due to his fathers career it was expected of D'banj to get an army career so he was taken to Nigeria's army academy when he was 13 years old. After three years D'banj left army academy because he did not want to join the army.

His brother Femi was the one who introduced D'banj to music by teaching him harmonica. Sadly Femi was killed in an air disaster at age 17. D'banj's parents did not approve of his musical aspirations and he struggled to get their blessing. This was the topic of his song All the Way, which is on his first album.

D'banj's music is tributed to his brother; he brings the Afro-beat sound into the new millennium. He mainly sings about his life and experiences, and he uses humor with a deeper meaning to document the struggle of a Nigerian youth who is try to realize his dreams. He is a joint producer with Don Jazzy.

In 2005 D'banj's released his first album, "No Long Thing". The album provided several hit singles, the single Tongolo was a big hit and was his breakthrough. His success gave him the opportunity to collaborate with other artists, such as Dare Art-Alade. In 2006 he released his follow up album, Rundown Funk U Up, this also provided numerous singles including "Why Me?", which was another hit.

In 2008 he released the album "The Entertainer" that included the hits "Gbono Feli Feli" and "Entertainer". Also in 2008, he signed to the GOOD Music record label owned by Kayne West and became artist and producer. When he found out he Twittered that it was the best birthday present he ever had, and gave a tribute to his brother Femi.

Dbanj is also known for his community work; he is credited as being the first UN Youth Ambassador for Peace from Nigeria, and the began the Koko foundation for Youth and Peace development. Dbanj plays at the music festival, This Day Africa Rising each year and he has also played at the Afrikan Shrine in Lagos. Dbanj's hits have been given the dance mix treatment by many successful DJs and have become very popular club hits that are played at nightclubs around the world.
