Styles And Trends For Southwest Paintings

By Alyce Larson

Southwest paintings are available in a vast array of styles and media. Abstract painters often use the Native American styles in history to produce modern work. Artists tend to concentrate on the landscapes and cultures that are most predominant in the area. Oils and watercolors are the most commonly used media, and art produced for tourists is produced to give a nostalgic reminder of one's visit.

Artists who are well known and whose work is particularly pricey often offer prints to clients who can't afford the originals. Limited edition prints are always more valuable and expensive, and those making investments in art need to consider the number of prints that have been produced. Investment art is at its most profitable when the art of up and coming painters is purchased before the artist reaches his full potential.

Arizona and New Mexico have stark landscapes that have made them popular subject matter for painters. The mountains and canyons are breathtaking, and the cultures that reside in the area play a role in the themes of such work. There are local artists who specialize in their local scenery but visiting artists also take advantage of the landscapes in their work.

The vistas of the region have inspired writers as well as artists. DH Lawrence is one of the many writers who spoke about the area. The cultures of the ancient world led to cave art that inspires today's artists' styles. Wildlife and culture forms an important part of locally produced work. It is also common for artists to use impressionistic styles and colors to depict the unique hues of the area.

The Pueblon tribe is among the oldest in the area, and their influence has had an impact on the colors and lines contemporary artists use. They used repetitive designs and earthy palettes. Traditionally, this culture used to use art to tell stories. More modern tribes prefer to depict ceremonies through their art.

The colonial era had its impacts on the art world as well. Hispanic artists used leather and weaving as their primary creative media, but their work has become a distinctive influence on modern painting. The Europeans who settled in the region were struck by the striking vistas. This led to an upsurge in the popularity of Anglo American art.

Silver jewelry became a common form of art during the 1800s. The European settlers introduced watercolors and oils to the Native American tribes, and many thus began to use these media in their own work. Art was used to depict culture, and the use of modern media dramatically influenced the methods used.

After the first world war, many American settlers began to use the native cultures and landscapes in their art. There have been a number of prolific artists from that era who have produced an enormous amount of work inspired solely by this region.

Kachina dolls and fetishes are an imperative part of the Native American religion. They make use of symbolism to depict ideals, and the appearance of such sculptures has had an impact on many of the more abstract artists painting in the area today. Petroglyphs that were left behind by the Pueblon are also an important inspiration for Southwest paintings today.
