Biography, Style And Discography Of Dr. Draw

By Corinne Hyde

Dr. Draw is an indie band based in Canada. It was named after Eugene Draw, who is the leader and violinist of the outfit. He started his career as a street busker, and received his 'doctor' title from the way he managed to lift the spirits of those passing by. His career has continued to focus on driving this positivism into compositions that are not limited to any single genre.

The band's albums have won best seller status, and has expanded to include a number of musicians who play electronic instruments. In 2008, the instruments included were the electric cello, harp, guitar and violin. Despite the traditional classic genres these instruments are usually used for, the band's music combines a youthful, contemporary feel to its classical undertones.

The band's fans are being introduced to classical music through their contemporary use of rhythm and technical adeptness. They have played as an opening act for Bette Midler and have also shared the stage with Seal. At the moment, they want to take their music to eastern listeners through events throughout Asia.

The band aims to bring a unified creative experience to a variety of cultures, and this element leads to a constant evolution of their style. They frequently blend unexpected sounds together, which is largely responsible for the fact that their music is impossible to classify.

The music combines classical strings with facets of jazz, rock and pop. The style can often seem disparate. Their music also has a major element of electronica, with funk and world styles incorporated. They have a strong jazz undertone, which has led to their acceptance in this community. They are often invited to play at jazz events.

The local charts have been kind to the band, and their discs have achieved high sales. Their first disc received its name from the rail route that Eugene used to use. The latest disc the band has produced was created to help the audience to find serenity among the chaos of the modern world. They are renowned for breaking the boundaries of genre.

Even though the band uses only electronic instruments, their style is extremely organic. They have included certain house elements but their foundations are always in classical music. The band leader's family originated in Moscow, and his mother was a ballerina. Eugene was an obsessive violinist as a child, and he continued to pick up additional instruments later. Violin is still his preferred instrument.

Vanessa Mae was one of the first musicians to offer a contemporary perspective on classical music. Eugene's style has evolved past simply pasting classical tunes onto pop beats. Instead, the music is independently composed. The balance achieved between atmosphere, rhythm and traditional stringed instruments is best demonstrated in the most recent album, Adagio.

Adagio's main strength comes from the melody hooks, which are catchy. Each song develops into a major climax, which certain listeners find grandiose. Others enjoy the epic nature of these tracks. Dr. Draw has performed at many clubs and festivals in 2012, and has won many eastern fans through Asian events.
