Types Of Acoustic Bass Amp Devices

By Kathrine Lasseter

Searching for an acoustic bass amp is confusing simply because of the myriad variety of options present in the market today. There are jazz and rock versions, plenty more for other genres too. These choices make it rather difficult to comprehend for a rookie.

There are types that are suitable for the the novice music maker. Yet the advance types can even confuse most skilled musicians too. However, what you must know is that there are just four basic types.

A Tube amplifier is also called as valve amplifier and it is the oldest kind around. Majority of its popularity stems from the fact that it was introduced around the time electric guitars started coming into the music industry. This is why you shall find plenty of old school bassists and guitarists using this sort of amplifier. It produces deep sounds but it can be too heavy or tough to maintain.

The second type called strong state amplifiers do not use tubes but use transistors to produce the amplification effect. They are much more heavy duty and lighter to use. However, some musicians complain that this kind of amplifier produces a sterilized and flat sound.

The modeling amplifier is usually geared towards musicians who work with computers. This is because it utilizes digital processing software along with an amplifier to recreate the effect of tube amplifiers. Hence, with a variety of settings, one can easily remake sounds typically associated with a tube amplifier. A hybrid system usually mixes together sounds from all generations. To manage this it uses not just transistors but also tubes. Together, they are capable of blasting out tube amplifier sounds as well as transistor amplifiers.

Not only is there a difference in digital and transistor output but also a major distinction between the methods of reverberation used by the amplifier. There are only two types that can be used namely digital and springtime reverberation. For the former one uses only electric circuits but for the later one has to rely on transducers and a microphone.

While many musicians and guitarists are bothered by the kind of amplifier and what effect is the best out of the lot, you have to be more concerned about the effects and sounds produced by different acoustic bass amp machines. Some are better off with digital technology while others might prefer staying with tubes and transistors. Whatever your choice, remember that you will have to learn how to play with all if you want to make great music.
