How difficult is it to Learn Violin?

By Elke Onon

After all is said and done " the Violin is just a musical instrument. One often gets put off by the thought that one has to be a musical genius in order to learn to play the violin " often YouTube videos of 3-4 year old geniuses playing the Violin extenuate these myths. In reality you do not have to be a musical genius to learn how to play the violin

The qualities you need are simply " the interest to play the violin and the tenacity to be taught how to play it. Having these qualities is half the battle " however you need to understand that it will take time for you to learn the basics of handling and playing the instrument. Be prepared to practice -practice " practice.

Everyone learns at different rates " some people pick up the violin and fall in love with it and cant put it down and practice in any of their spare time " for people like this " it may take them a few days to master handling their violin. Truly, it does not matter how long it takes you to master handling and playing provided you are progressing and enjoying yourself. This is especially true for those who want to learn violin from home.

Looking back, 20 + years ago, at what options were available to some wanting to learn to play the violin " this consisted of either " hiring a personal mentor or signing up to classes at a local music school.

Please don't misunderstand me " I am not saying that there is anything wrong with these choices " but I believe that if a person could not go down either of these routes " they should still be able to enjoy learning to play the violin. Today this has been made possible via online Violin courses available on the internet.

Today you can sign up for these violin classes online from the comfort of your home. In some cases " you can even trial part of the course for free before paying for the rest of the course.

Excellent for a lot of people that just want to learn the instrument form the comfort of their home without stress.

A possible downside may be the fact that you may not be able to interact with other students at the same skills level as you- for some people this may be an issue " but fir the majority of people the idea of learning for home is quite enticing

Ask yourself this question " will I be happy learning from home? If the answer is yes then by all means sign up to an online course to learn to play the violin. Down the road when you are a bit more confident and perhaps finances and time allow " you can go and enrol in a music school.

Doing it like this will ensure that when you do get into a classroom environment you are ready and capable of coping with whatever pace set by the teacher.

If possible try to buy some at least a couple of good books on playing the violin. Don't be tempted to buy sheet music until you can play the violin comfortably. This comes by you first building up your technique " this is the most important part of your education.
