Get Professional Looking Pictures With These Tips

By Joanie Giallorenzo

Photography is a special art form which requires both talent and training. This doesn't mean you're born a pro, but you need to work hard to learn the craft.

As a photographer, it is important that you keep your batteries well charged so you never have to miss out on the opportunity to take a great picture. The LCD screen on a digital camera can eat a lot of battery power, so put freshly charged batteries in the camera before you need to use it. Another good suggestion is to bring along spare camera batteries so that you will never miss a photo opportunity.

If you want to take better pictures with an SLR camera, play around with the manual settings. Digital photography has taken the stress, and much of the associated costs, out of taking pictures. This allows you to explore the different features your camera has to offer without any consequences.

Photographers, like most artists, try to convey an emotion or feeling with their photographs. They must deliberately compose their shots to bring focus to their subject and use light and settings to convey the appropriate feeling. Perfectly composed pictures are the ones that people can view and understand what the photographer wanted to share with them.

If you want to take great pictures, you have to take a lot of them; buying a big memory card will allow you to hold the many pictures you need to take. With more storage on a memory card, having room for photos does not have to be a worry. A great part of larger memory space is that you can use the RAW format. This allows greater flexibility in editing.

Make sure you pack your photography equipment with care when going on a trip. Also important is to remember to bring all the extra items that you might need including lenses, batteries and cleaning supplies. Do not take more than what you need and think about what will be convenient to transport with you on your trip.

Learning photography cannot be rushed, and the same is true when taking a good shot. You can't always choose when a shot will be available. Trying to force the issue will just leave you with lousy photos full of flaws.

You can change the effect of your picture by altering your shutter speed. For fast moving events, a lightning fast shutter speed allows you capture the action of moving objects without the blur of a normal shutter speed. This technique is crucial at sporting events. Opening the shutter for a longer time can also produce interesting effects, showing motion through a blurred effect. This blurred effect works well when photographing waterfalls or running streams.

There is so much more to taking a great picture than just point and shoot. Practice all of the techniques listed here to help build your own personal style and give yourself the tools to take awe-inspiring shots!
