Boudoir Photography Explained

By Stefanie Riedel

A boudoir is a French word that is used to describe a lady's bedroom, changing room or sitting room, otherwise known as the private area reserved for bathing and dressing. Historically a boudoir was meant to describe many rooms, often a sitting room, or dressing room, however throughout time a boudoir changed to mean a lady's evening sitting room which was not to be confused with her day sitting room, which suggests that boudoirs were only seen in homes of the rich. Boudoir photography is therefore the photography of women in their most private moments in the most private rooms of their homes, which were typically decorated very ornately.

Boudoir photography is not a new concept and has been around since the early 1900s. There have been many celebrities in the past who have participated in boudoir photography including Jean Harlow and Kathleen Meyers. Boudoir photography became highly popular in the early 1900s with the original pinup girls and has recently become even more popular with mainstream crowds as many women are much more open and comfortable with the concept of being photographed in this style.

Generally boudoir photography is shot in a photographer's studio that has been decorated with ornate fashions. Boudoir photography is also shot in luxurious hotel rooms. Boudoir photography has become quite popular and now is considered fashionable to create erotically suggestive images using mostly women and sometimes couples. Nudity is implied rather than explicit.

Boudoir photography has become more attractive to a market of brides who wish to surprise their future husbands by gifting them with sexy photos on or before their wedding day. Commercially boudoir photography is also popular for women who wish to gift their significant other for their anniversary, birthday or valentines day. There are even requests for boudoir photography for many body changing alterations such as weight loss, even maternity.

Boudoir photography is distinguished from other types of photography such as glamor, fine art nude and erotic photography and can be described as more elegant than these genres. Generally Boudoir photography is considered more classy than nude or erotic photography.

For the most part, women seek out the services of women photographers whenever they wish to be photographed in this style. Knowing that the photos are specifically for one person's eyes only, women tend to feel more comfortable with another woman photographing them. Boudoir photographers are often hard to find, because it takes a special photographer who is able to make the client comfortable expressing themselves in a way that is most likely only reserved for their significant other. Often times you can find that wedding photographers also provide services such as boudoir photography for their brides and often can be purchased together as a package.
