If you have been around digital SLR photography for any time period you will have heard that the glass (lenses) in front of the camera is as vital, if not more significant, than the camera itself. It's definitely true.
After agonizing over the choice about which digital camera you'll choose, the choice of a lens or lenses for that camera is equally as vital. And that isn't an easy choice, either. Every new photographer comes to the realization that choosing a lens is a time for self-control and patience. There is no place for impulsive behavior here. You have to match up your requirements with what is available, and, if you've the money on hand, you make the purchase.
Selecting The Right Lenses There's some great news when it comes to making a camera lens purchase. Some camera lenses may suit your requirements for more than one kind of photography. Your very first lens purchase might be among those lenses which satisfies many type of photography. Generally, folks get a multi focal length, or zoom, lens as their very first lens. That one lens, if well-planned, can be a general, all purpose lens for every day pictures, but it may also be an excellent portrait lens, a medium telephoto lens for taking pictures from a distance, and a normal lens.
A lens such as a zoom lens of 18-105mm (or somewhere in that range) is only the type of lens which may fill a lot of photography requirements. Take your time selecting that first dslr lens because it's an important one. As your photography experiences develop, you probably be choosing how you wish to go as a major focus in the special kind of photography you wish to focus on. This decision will affect the lenses you will want to put in your kit.
For example, if you desire to specialize in "people photography," you may narrow down your lens options to include a medium telephoto lens, and that choice will differ greatly from that of somebody else who wants to focus on landscape photography, because their choice would probably be a wide angle lens that would be good for their specific kind of pictures.
Specialty Lenses A macro lens, while suitable for close-up photography, is among those lenses which could be used for more than one sort of photography. Many folks do not realize that macro lenses are superb portrait lenses and medium telephoto lenses. One good macro lens can do the job of several lenses, and do it well. You may also want to add a "normal lens" to your photography kit.
While 50 mm isn't technically "normal" for every camera, it's a fantastic choice for nearly all photographer since there are so many things you may do with that aperture and focal length. The wide aperture of nearly all 50mm lenses is pretty wide, so it will give you the advantage of being able to shoot in low light that some of the zoom lenses (especially the less costly ones) do not have. In addition, 50mm lenses are good for portraits and street photography as well as doing a fairly good job with all but the most demanding of close up photos.
Finding camera lenses should not be an impulsive decision. Each lens must be chosen with much thought and consideration as to the impact it will have on your goal as a photographer.
