How To Turn A Classic Family Portrait To A Creative One

By Don Wong

You again find yourself thinking what to do for your annual family portrait this year. You reminisce your previous portraits, and although the traditional formal setup looked beautiful, it did not exactly differ from all the other portraits taken in the past. This year, for a change, you decide to get more creative.

And then you start asking yourself which themes you should adopt. To help you make decisions better, keep the following tips in mind.

What is the persona of your family, or perhaps the activities you love doing together? Are you lovers of music? Are you a family of travellers? Do you especially love the colour blue? Do you have a particular TV show or film you all like, whose characters have their individual counterparts in your family? Is there any super hero you are fond of?

Let this serve as your inspiration for your family portrait's theme. Putting in props will also make the scene appear more real and vibrant, such as bringing maps, souvenirs, and luggage if you are a group of travellers. Meanwhile, musical instruments would add a nice genuine touch to a portrait of a family of musically-inclined, something photographers would surely have fun taking.

When it comes to photographers for family portraits, you have to remember to choose the best fit for your own needs. Photographers produce varied qualities of work; similarly, what is nice for one might not strike as good enough for everybody else. That is why you must always look at a photographer's sample family portraits before signing up for a portraiture session. By looking at these samples, you could gauge which photographer can give you the the exact results you want.

Do not hesitate to solicit suggestions for other concepts from your photographer. Likewise, you could ask for tips on how to improve your own concept and make it more photographable. The more the creative input that is poured into the family portrait, the better it would turn out.
