Film-maker Karan Johar paves the way for a new tide of directors and actors

By Rohini Nadia

When model-turned-actor Siddharth Malhotra took his first steps into acting, he donned the role of a child-artist in the television series Prithviraj Chauhan. After walking the runway several times for Indian and international designers including Roberto Cavalli, Manish Arora, Manish Malhotra and Rohit Bal., Sidharth Malhotra will now star in his first film along with debutants Alia Bhatt and Varun Dhawan. For Siddharth, who began modeling at the age of 16 and has won several titles including Gladrags Face of the Year 2009 award and the NDTV Model of the Year 2010, the film will mark the start of a long and promising career. The 24-year-old actor gained recognition from director Karan Johar while working as an assistant director for the film My Name Is Khan.

Quoting Siddharth Malhotra, "One day, I was assisting Karan on My Name is Khan, and now I'm the leading man of Student of the Year. I have to pinch myself to believe this is for real." For this fresh new actor, the film is a dream start. Not many newcomers hit the silver screen under big banners like Karan Johar's Dharma Productions. Siddharth says, "Sometimes, I'm a bit nervous. But at most times, I'm confident. I have landed a dream debut. Karan, according to me, has the safest pair of hands in the film business." And that's not where it all stops for Siddharth.

Karan Johar has introduced Tarun Mansukhani with Dostana (2008), with the sequel currently being planned. For the film Wake Up Sid (2009), Dharma Productions put debutant Ayan Mukerji on the director's seat. The Dharma Productions banner will soon unveil yet another film by its 11th new director, Akshay Roy who will call the shots for the upcoming Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani.

In the film, Kajol will be seen shaking a leg with Siddharth Malhotra and Varun Dhawan. Quoting Karan Johar, "Kajol is in the disco song and she has danced with the boys. Kajol's presence is very important for me. She has been there in every film of mine and she has always been lucky." The actress was reported to have quickly picked up the steps in just 15 minutes, inspiring the newcomers in the film with the flair for dancing.

As for speculations of her marriage ending her career, the actress has proved the gossip untrue. She looks forward to acting working with her favorite director Karan Johar and Shah Rukh Khan yet again, though she insists on stronger scripts. She last featured in Karan Johar's My Name Is Khan, a film that received mixed reviews due to its story-line which was also deemed controversial by quite a few. However, for Karan Johar's upcoming release, Kajol is bound to be a crowd-puller, with fans knocking down cinema doors to get a peek at her on-screen after two long years.
