Social Issues Faced By Children Of Mentally Ill Parents

By Nichole Cunningham

It can be noted that children of mentally ill parents are not fairly treated by other people in their respective societies. This can be attributed to a number of factors and it can also be observed that such kids do not enjoy a normal upbringing like others. In order to deal with this problem, there is need for concerted efforts by different people to act in a positive way towards the needs of such kids.

The major problem faced by such people is related to lack of things such as shelter, education as well as food given that the fathers or mothers are not able to provide for them due to their mental condition. The fathers or mothers with mental problems also need to be cared for on account of their condition that may be delicate which results in children failing to enjoy parental care which is essential for their development.

Such kids often face the problem of being looked down upon by other people in their respective societies. There is a tendency by other people to despise people who have mental illnesses. This can spill to their children since they may appear unattractive as a result of lack of care that is often provided by the parent. People will tend to treat them with disdain as they may think that they are cursed such that they would not allow them near their own kids.

Kids who are born by people who have mental problems have a high degree of poverty. The result is that they may be treated as social outcasts not suitable to be in society. This causes alienation among them and they may not be in a position to develop in a normal way which can impact on their future life.

However, charitable organizations ought to take a leading role in improving the welfare of the kids who have guardians with mental illnesses. These can provide food, shelter as well as educational requirements to these kids since they are specifically meant for this particular task. Other generous people can also assist since every person has a responsibility to care for the less privileged people to make their life bearable.

People should also learn to treat others as equal regardless of their social background. It is not by desire for some people to have mental health problems hence it is the responsibility of every person to ensure that they treat all people as equal.

The treatment people get from others has a bearing on their mental development hence it is imperative to make sure that measures are put in society to cater for disadvantaged kids in particular. Failure to treat such kind of people with respect can also traumatize them such that they may also end up suffering from the same problem. This may affect the society as a whole if due consideration is not given in order to address this issue.

Basically mental illness can be a problem to third parties such as kids as a result of various reasons. If the breadwinner in the family has a mental illness, then the kids are likely to suffer different types of ill treatment by other members of the society since they are also treated as outcasts. Concerted efforts have to be taken in order to improve the welfare of children of mentally ill parents since they are subjected to different forms of treatment by other members of society.
