Matt Dodge To Play For Chicago Bears

By Rebekah Alford

With Adam Podlesh out with a hip flexor injury, Matt Dodge has been selected to relieve him. In 2010, Dodge played with the NY Giants, but was not given a renewal. His average punt as a rookie was 44.8 yards.

Looking at his stats, we see consistent records set as a rookie punter. In 2007, his record was for 80 punts of a total of 3,307 years, for an average of 41.7 yards. Again, in 2008, he averaged 43.9 yards a punt, setting a record with this and other things. He made the longest punt of 73 yards, the most yards (296), and kicked 20 punts inside the 20-yard line, setting records with each of those.

At Appalachian State, as a freshmen, he began his streak for making records. He saw action in all twelve of their games, punting 41 times for 1,626 yards total. He averaged 39.7 yards per punt. For one seven punt streak, he totaled 293 yards, three of which were inside the 20-yard line. Two different times during the year he punted 55 yards. During most of his games, he had either 5, 6, or 7 punts fore each game. In a three game total, he punted six or more punts for a total of 229 yards.

At age 25, weighing in at 220 pounds, he is a top punter, setting many records. He has played since high school, playing in college as well. Though he was an excellent punter, setting many records, one mistake may have been his downfall. Since someone has to win and someone lose, maybe it won't have too much of a negative impact. He is a great punter. There are three parts to a football team. There is the offense, the defense, and the special team. The special team does the kicking, including punting.

After all his college playing he was ready for the NFL. He was picked in the seventh round, and did well. His miscalculation that didn't get the ball out of bounds turned the tide. He was not renewed, and is now a free agent. He has played some, but remains as a free agent. It remains to be seen what his new position might bring for him.

Tom Coughlin, coach for the Giants, said it was extremely hard to cut Dodge and to have to tell him about it. It went well, according to him. He complimented the growth and maturity he had seen that year, however, and expects that, with his strong legs, the strongest, Coughlin says, Matt will become a fantastic punter.

Coughlin said the reason his decision was so hard is that every player in summer camp is good. The best players are there, and when drafting players, the decision is very hard. Each player has high expectations because they are encouraged to reach for the highest. But, selections have to be made, and someone has to be cut, even if they are good.

For most, one mistake after several successes doesn't have much of an impact. However, for Matt Dodge, just that happened. After an excellent playing history, setting records every season, one mistake in calculation on a kick has impacted him severely. However, a comeback is likely, given the player he is.
