Basic Information About An Eye Donor

By Mitzi Fitzgerald

No single person on this earth is immortal. Death is not an option for anyone. It is like a rite of passage, which everybody has to go through. After death, all body parts become useless to the dead person. They cease to be functional. This is probably the reason behind choosing to be an eye donor. This category of people chooses to have their eyes given to others who are alive and who need them.

It is not difficult to donate this part of the body. One simply needs to register his or her desire with an eye bank. This registration gives the bank the green light to go ahead with the procedure. It is also necessary to notify family members of this intention. This will help to prevent misunderstandings between the bank and the family of the deceased. It will make the procurement process run smoothly.

The most essential part of that is needed from the entire eye is the cornea. If one has a damaged cornea, his or her eye may not be of much help. It is important to take good care of the cornea if he or she would like to be a donor in the end. This is not to say that people who do not intend to give up theirs for donation should not take good care of them.

The reason for the great importance of the cornea is that it helps to treat one of the most common eye problems, which is corneal blindness. This is a situation where the cornea of the individual is damaged. The individual therefore experiences difficulty with his or her eyesight. There are very many people who suffer from this condition. Many of them can however not get help because there is a scarcity of donors. This is a very sad state of affairs.

A key aspect of donation is that it does not discriminate against anyone. It is open to every Tom, Dick, and Harry. It does not even matter whether the donor had eye defects or not. So long as one consents to it, there is nothing that can hold it back from happening. This leaves one wondering why there are very few people who take this noble action.

A nether key aspect is that it is done free of charge. All the costs related to the act of donation are catered for by the eye bank in question. One should not be conned into paying for any of these services in order to have the wishes of their loved ones fulfilled.

Including this information in a will is not a good idea. The procedure of getting the eyes should be done as soon as is possible after the death of the donor. Executing a will is done long after the person is buried. Only then can the donation be done. At this point, the donation will no longer be useful.

Yes, the thought of being an eye donor is scary. The benefit is to the recipient is however immeasurable. It is worth a second thought.
