Important Features To Check When Getting Camcorders

By Kevin Wray

You were probably a young man or a young woman when camcorders cost about $600 and were as big as cinder-blocks. But things are different now; you can get mid-range video recorders with 1080p true HD recording for as little as $150 and these objects can fit inside your closed hand. Back then, it wasn't thought possible that a time like this would ever come. Also, camcorders were thought of as a luxury back then. But now, they are a necessity that can be found in any American household. It is not uncommon to find state of the art video recorders that can shoot up to 120 frames per second.

The major and most successful manufacturing companies of camcorders are Sony and Panasonic. These companies offer warranties of their products for up to a year. This means that if your device stops working during this period, you can get it fixed or get a replacement for free. Before going out to buy your device, you need to work out just what you need the recorder for. If you want to shoot normal routine stuff like birthday parties, then you are better off going for one with 720p resolution, a fixed lens with 10x or no zoom and illumination of 5 lux or lower (lower is better). This should cost you $200 at the most.

If, on the other hand, you plan on making independent films of high quality, then you will need something that costs a lot more money, starting with $1500. These are the specifications you should be looking for a camcorder like this: 1080i/720p resolution, illumination of 2 to 7 lux, 10x or greater zoom, optical image stabilization and an interchangeable lens. Remember that the more features a device has, the more expensive it is going to be.

If you are on a budget and are looking to get one of the decent camcorders, that are good for shooting a little of everything, then you can get one with a Flash memory card, and FireWire, USB 2.0 and S-Video connectors, with a microphone connector, it should cost you not more than $500. With a camera like this, you will be covered in pretty much every department of video making without spending too much money. Now there are some people who just refuse to put a price on being cool. They want the latest stuff regardless of how much it costs or whether all the features will be utilized.

If you are this individual, therefore the thing you need is one of these camcorders with a 1080i/1080p quality, high definition photos for 8x10 prints and a touch-screen LCD. This beast will likely cost you anywhere from $800 to $1500, depending on the other features and the number of accessories you get. If you are a film maker, then the tripod just can't be ignored. A bag is a must at any rate, since you don't desire dirt to gather in the insides of the camera, decreasing its life time-span.
