What is a tribute band?

By Megan Heps

A tribute act is a singer, group or musician who performs the music of a well known artist, generally one that no longer performs. Tribute bands are generally named after the band, a song name or album name. Originally tribute bands were established in appreciation of the original band, although in some cases the tribute bands have received recognition for their work. Elvis impersonators are the most plentiful tribute act across the world, and the Beatles are the first band to have a tribute band.

Tribute bands are not the same as a cover bands. A cover band tends to play the music of another band, whereas a tribute band attempts to replicate the look and even mannerisms of the original band and its members. Alternatively some tribute bands chose to imitate the appearance, but re-interpret the music style, to add drama or comedy to their performance.

A spin-off band is not the same as a tribute band. Tribute band members do not include any of the members of the original act, whereas a spin-off band contains one of more of the original members. Spin-off bands generally perform the original music, and occasionally feature guest appearances from the original members.

On a number of occasions a member of a tribute band has gone on to become a member of a spin-off band or even the original band. This generally happens when an original members leaves, or even dies. This provides a band a way in which they can continue, as the tribute act is so familiar with their work, they can easily fit in.

Tribute acts range in success, and consequently their arenas in which they perform. From stadiums to parties and weddings, tribute acts perform at a range of occasions. An Oasis tribute band even performed at a sell-out Oasis gig in Paris, when the band pulled-out.
